Guys, I need help or at least reassurance. I purchased a '96 LP Classic on eBay. It is beautiful but arrived with a terrible smoke oder. I have put it out on my sunny deck the last two days for about 10 hours each day, bringing it in in the evening. Now I find that the pearl inlays have darkened. So much so that they are nearly black! I've not applied any cleaners or chemicals of any kind only sunlight.

Has anyone ever heard of this? is it temporary? is there anything I can do? Please help!

classics have darker inlays to begin with, if it's really hot where you live . . . i rekkon they have cooked lol be careful but try and see if a solvent ( a little dab so not damage your board) will leave a clean mark on the darkend colour.

Pics would help though so ppl can see the extent of the damage. If something like rubbing alcohol fails you can always be daring and rub the top coat off. CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH, BE CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE WOOD WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN UR HANDS OR OIL!

best way to get rid of the smoke smell is to put some fragrance sheets with eh guitar.

To get the smoke odor out put it in the case and put a couple of fabric softner sheets in the case with it for a few weeks!!
I would never set my git out in direct sun, could cause major problems. Roman (RFR) or Greg (BCRGreg) on the forum here could speak to the inlays, my take is you will probably have to replace them!:(

Try to clean the fret board with some Linseed Oil. That just might clean the inlays up as well as oil the board.. Can't hurt.
The dryer sheets are a good idea. It might take some time though. Try and spray the inside of the case with Febreeze. Just don't put the guitar in the case until it dries. Do this once a week until the smell is gone.

I have heard that that can happen...sunlight can darken the inlays. They just might be damaged beyond repair.

You're going to need to get it looked at by a professional to get a true answer.

If they are ruined, of course you'll probably want to replace them and restore it to it's former beauty.

You can go large and get the gorgeous 50's style inlays, or buy some modern ones and have a luthier replace them. If you're handy you might try it yourself. Personally, I'd be calling Roman first, then other pros here on the MLP forum.

As for the smoke, you might try buying a polishing kit and give the guitar a good going over. Taking a micro-layer off the finish might do the trick.

The case probably stinks too. I like the idea of throwing a couple of dryer sheets in the case when the guitar isn't in it.

I read somewhere that Fabreeze and nitro don't get along too well... From what I can recollect some dude was spraying it in his room and it got on his LP... I believe it caused the nitro to blister... so definitely if you're using it in the case be sure it dries out completely.

:thumb: That's why I said be sure that it dries before you put the guitar into the case.
