Hi ! I want to upgrade my Gibson LP 2003 standard pots for better ones. I´ve read tones of mods here like 500k, 300k, oranges and so but I ended up totally crazy! so let me ask you guys:

1- How do I know which K my pots are ?! I opened the cover of my LP but there´s nothing writing on them but Gibson, I could read using a mirror on side tone pots:X2-44071079 and volume 62-44070034. I guess my pots must be the worse possible because I can notice a huge difference among them and those of my EDS-1275. On my LP I almost have a "dead" volume (and tone) pots since I only notice something like on/off not an increasing sound/tone, while in my EDS-1275 I can really play with them an use for distortion-clean sound.

2-I want to put the best I can in my LP but I don´t understand nothing about changing caps (why), wich brand (?) of pots are better...
Help this pour soul !

That would work if you want to split coil your pickups. Just make sure that you have a four wire pickups before buying that set. I email Gibson and they have told me that they have been putting 300K pots for volume and 500K for tone. I feel thats odd value for volume. Wymore Guitars have mant different sets of kits to choose from. I hope this gives you an idea for what you want. They are all 500k pots sets.

Good Luck~!!!!!!

Have a reputable guitar technician ('luthier' is such an overused term!) check it out. You may save money in the long run.

Thanks for your reply ! That´s my main issue: I don´t know if I got a four wire humbuckers. Just that they are the original PAF ones that came with my guitar...:(

Oh yeah ! I always have my tech for that! I´ve just wanted to give them the kit to do the job. Remember, I live in Brazil and sometimes is hard to find people who makes this kind of mod, I mean JP,of course, and maybe he will not be able to put some quality pieces .

BTW: We have very good techs here but due to the ridiculous very high customs fees they don´t do some mods unless you give them the set.

I'd bet your left nut that Gibson is using 300k pots for eveything except Custom Shop pieces.

You need 500k, long shaft, audio taper pots (preferable by CTS, Allparts sells them for about $8 each). These will have a nice taper and you will actually be able to turn your volume on 1-2 and not have it shut completely off!

As for caps, I prefer paper-in-oil, .022 for the bridge and .015 for the neck and I wire my LPs 50s style, which retains the treble as you turn the volume down.

You have a two wire pickups setup. The four wires you see comes from the pickup selector switch. I also see the ground plate in your pic so you'll need long shafts to do the job~!!! I hope that helps~!!!:thumb:

Here is the answer for my first post regarding numbers on gibson pots. I hope this helps you too:

44071079 - long shaft "tone" pot, 100K audio in very late 70s through mid 1980s, 500K audio in 1990s up until today
44070034 - long shaft "volume" pot, 300K linear
44070028 - short shaft "volume" pot, 300K linear
44070035 - short shaft "tone" pot, 500K audio
44070500 - short shaft pots, 500K, used in recent Historics, the pots with the scary plastic insides
