What is the most you can do with 42awg? How many winds per bobbin?

Looks to me like he's waaay beyond any kinda reasonable maximum. The only thing holding those coils in place on the bobbin is the winder's sheer willpower, and winding skill. :thumb:

Rod I have done 12.6k but it was really tight. I think the turns count was north of 7,000 turns per bobbin. It has been a long time since I did it. I just did one on Butyrate bobbins 10.6k which is a total of 6500 turns per bobbin. Anything over that for me just loses itself. The 12k was not a very good sounding pickup and the coil was freking massive and tried to fall apart on my a few times.

Now I will say for F-spaced bobbins you can get a bit higher, but again it loses something. I just did a 21.8k on standard bobbins from Stew Mac and it is freaking huge as well.

Yeah, I just wondered. Since I do only hand-guided winds, 6000 winds per bobbin with 42awg is the most I have done. I can see doing 6500, but not much more with my technique.

My winds tend to be on the fluffy side so even with 42 I've made a bunch with the bobbin ends looking like that.

Ok got a hybrid question for you guys.

I made a few of the 59/Custom 5 hybrids and was very pleased with them, the mismatched coils do some real cool stuff. Tonewise they sound very multi-dimensional to my ears. Very dynamic pickup.

Could the same be done with a mini humbucker or a firebird pickup? Anybody here ever messed with two different coils in a mini? One coil wound with 42ga and the other wound with 43?

I personally have not. I do not do a lot of mini pups. Maybe Rod or Dave could chime ing here. Generally tho I do not care for mixing wire size. With my style at least it does not work. Glad you had good results.

Rod anything really over the 7000 turns , goes sloppy on ya so really not much of a need for it. I will tell ya that doing it with Form-var is a different story. I have found it is very grouchy sounding almost P-90 land.

Dave I hear ya on the fluffy thing. I have a couple sets that are not as strict via the tension, but when you get up to that high of a dc it has to be tight.

Update here is a shot of the pup prior to Wax potting. Notice how the wire is tucked. A lot of pups run them down the middle obviously there is no room for this so I tuck all my wiring this way.

In this shot you can see the size of the coil to the edges of the late. This is a big ****er to say the least

Wire tucking 101 here

And a full frontal shot of he double Ds

Okay now for the readings. At wind temperature she read in at 22.6k. After the coils cooled a little and she was assembled and room temp sat in she read 21.5 at 74 degrees. At stage temp for moderate lighting at around 105 degrees she will be at 21.9k. Hope you all en joyed this. I may do one on a lower wind later in the week. By the way this is not the hottest I have done. With 44 wire I did 34.8 and with the 43 I have done 24.6k. Thank you all for watching.

And to Nico no, as with any wind I do the noise just is not there even in tap mode as it draws a bit from the other coil.
Any chance of hearing it pls?

This is Nitrous's set. I am hoping he can do a review of them when he gets them.

Nice thread!

Looks like it's been knocked up! I'd call it the "Third Trimester" pickup. You really have a way with these hot winds, Rayne. I don't know how you keep 'em sounding good with all that wire. You've got about TWO MILES of copper on that pickup if my math is right. I could probably make three of my low-winds with the same amount of wire.

Yeah, I just wondered. Since I do only hand-guided winds, 6000 winds per bobbin with 42awg is the most I have done. I can see doing 6500, but not much more with my technique.

I put a little over 6500 on one of my butyrate bobbins via machine wind once. It was lumped in the center, stood taller than the flanges, and I had to pinch my traverse mid-wind to get it on like that otherwise it would have spilled off the ends. I thought I was making an EVH PAF. Ha! Didn't work out for me. Too "rubbery" sounding for my taste.

Sorry folks...don't get to the forum to post much these days.

I have a USA Charvel So Cal that Rayne wound me a set of these for back in the summer when they were still the Mofee. Really beefed up the tone from the stock DiMarzios. Retains nice clarity and has awesome punch. Nice and aggressive...just the way I like it.
So when I recently got a USA San Dimas I asked for more please :)

I don't really have a great method to record, but I'll see what I can do.

what is that pup ,the "brobucker" its 10k of 42
I questioned this on the SD forum ,about how you can get 5k of 42 gauge wire on a standard height bobbin (the brobucker dont look knocked up in pics) ,by hand & even with machine wound pups i never considered to bring my limiters in to keep on winding ................:thumb::applause:
