Just outta curiosity has anyone ever known or have themselves left a guitar in it's case for multiple years unattended to take it out and it played in tune. I 've heard stories of people that left guitars in cases for 20 years and they pull em out in like mint condition slightly out of tune. Any stories?

I usually detune 1-2 steps if I am not going to be playing them for even 2 months.

Years no. But some old favourites have been replaced in my affections by newer guitars. One such guitar is my old Takamine which I pulled out the other day after months in its case and it was stil in tune with itself (couple of cents out on a tuner).

I bought a G&L Legacy in 92' that I didn't bond with put it in the case and didn't look at it for 15 years. I was in my attic a few years ago putting an office together for my wife and saw the case(it's a finished attic)pulled it out and low and behold that sucker was still in relative tune. Strummed on it a while then put it up for sale. The only thing that I noticed is that the color of the guitar had seemed to get a little darker other wise it was in perfect shape.Wound up trading it for a Edwards Les Paul which I later sold and bought my Trad Pro.

In perfect tune, at A=440Hz? That's nigh unto impossible.

But I've found them in passable relative tune after years of storage and a trip in a moving van.

Yeah your probably right,I didn't throw a tuner on it, but for being in a case for so long It seemed pretty good to my ear.:thumb:

I bought a guitar that was in it's case for 43 years, it was not in tune but other than that it was perfect. The guitar had it's original strings and was not de-tuned by the orig. owner, but just needed a minor set up. If they're built well thay will last.
Cheers.

My Schecter Custom with a Floyd retains perfect tuning after months in the case.

I left my Maton EM325C tuned up in the case when I deployed for 6 months or thereabouts (Not really a good thing to do with an acoustic, I know) and it was still 'in tune' enough to play with a backing track.

At least to my uncultured, tone deaf and probably noise damaged ears... :hmm:

Sweet guitar.

I have a nylon string acoustic that I learnt on as a kid. Couldn't have been touched or tuned in 4 or 5 years and that played in tune when I dug it out, atleast in tune with itself.

Not in, as River said, 440 perfect tune. I have grabbed a Larrivee 12 string that was in a case for two years and it could pass for being in tune.

I never understood the whole "detune if you're storing the guitar". How is it different to your guitar always being on a stand or surpassing the stress you put on the guitar when playing? :hmm:.

My father in law buried a bottle of fine domestic plum brandy. It was dug out when his younger daughter got married. 25 years of lying in solid ground. I was the groom and I may say it tasted great. My father in law said it tasted better than before - "Overtuned!"

I want to know the exact same thing, if anyone can tell us.

I did for my original two LPs ('72 LP Custom '76 Deluxe). Can't remember if it was twenty years, but it was very close if it wasn't. Were they in tune? No, were they in good shape? Yes.
