I just noticed the other night that for three weeks, I have been playing a wound 3rd string on my 175 that still has factory strings on it. Weird, I guess my pads are thick enough that I couldn't tell the difference in feel.

False. You are making the assumption that what worked for a famous player must be what is correct for everyone else.

Thicker strings and tone is dependent on the guitar and the player.

Tone is also dependent on the person who is hearing said tone.

long scale= easier
sort scale= harder

Short scale bends easier. 24.75
Long scale bends harder. 25.5

Gibson is short scale
Fender is long scale

Gibson=Less tension
Fender=More tension

Gibson=looser feeling
Fender=tighter feeling

(it's really not that complicated to understand)
