Hello!
I have this outstanding greco EC500 LPC for around 4 years now and I was always wondering whats going on with those pickup covers
I assume these are UD ceramic pickups, they read around 7.8k and honestly sound really nice and very bright even with the stock 300/100k pots.

I'm no expert but it looks like someone just spray painted the front of the pickups? (the sides appear to look fine on the old photos I took when I got the guitar)
then the paint supposedly wore off slightly, you can see the original reflective gold in the neck pickup corners, and oxidized to chrome on the bridge pup (with spots where the paint flakes off to the original gold too).

if I'm not totally wrong and the paintjob ineed took place, what should I try and remove it with?(to preserve the original gold whatever condition it is under the paint)
of course I could leave it as it is but honestly that look always bugged me off slightly
thanks

I'm not sure if you could remove AND leave the gold intact. If it's nitro it will come off with acetone but I'm not convinced the gold plating will be left behind.

Whatever you try, remove the covers from the pickups first. Otherwise acetone or other products could leak through the pole screws and damage the pickups.

If you really hate those covers honestly, just replacing them would be easier and better.

In-situ: rub with a rag moistened with lacquer thinners and see if it removes the spray. Otherwise, covers off, and 1200 wet-and-dry, used wet.

The thing about gold is its non-reactive to solvents. I agree, looks like paint.

I’ll take your covers if you don’t want them!

I just picked up this ‘81 SS. I wonder if the pickups are the same as yours. Mine say “210307”.

512101 here. no idea but pretty sure mine are UDs
sound absolutely fine to me. a little harsh and kind of loose, but really shine for clean/crunch tones

btw, I managed to clean them using some acetone free nail polish
turned out pretty nice with the original gold intact
