After reading the Congrats to the new VIP thread, I got to wondering about some of the VIPs on this forum. Specifically those with less than 100 posts. My interest was piqued because of this post.

Someone suggest one or another member to the Mod-team...

usually you don't get VIP-status for backstage-contributions....:naughty:

We discuss - Alex decides

So I sorted through hundreds of pages of members and found the following names. Then I looked at what they had posted and where in an attempt to fathom why they were made VIP.

Michael Burkes 6 posts because he was a well known guitarist

bplexico 6 posts never started a thread posted only in Historics and Reissues Reason for VIP unknown

petethorn 7 posts in a six day span all in Other Les Pauls about a guitar he built. Reason of VIP because he built one.

slideboy 19 posts last one in 2008 Started one thread in Member Classified most posts were in Classified. Reason for VIP, I guess because he plays/played slide guitar.

wunderkitten 21 posts Started one thread in Historics. Other posts in various areas. Reason for VIP, it appears she is married to a guitar player.

Joe Ganzler 31 posts Reason: Respected authority on vintage guitars.

Fitz777 60 posts Varied posts, has not posted since 2012. Reason for VIP unknown.

Dave Johnson 63 posts Reason for VIP, vendor.

Jblplayer 65 posts Never started a thread. Posts mainly in Vintage and the Historics sections. Reason for VIP, is a "know" guitar player.

max luthier 74 posts Never started a thread. Posts in various areas. Reason for VIP, he is a luthier.

EdKing1949 77 posts Various threads started and numerous posts. Reason for VIP, known guitarist with Lynyrd Skynyrd.

CDaughtry 99 posts Threads started mainly in Vintage and most posts there as well. Reason for VIP, unknown.

These are my musings about this subject. Other than the names of the members and their post count and where they post, my conjectures are mine and mine alone.

I have not started this thread to be disrespectful, I just and trying to figure out how things work. Although, as I have said before; I believe Alex just decides who he wants and there is no discussion involved.

*Lynyrd Skynyrd.

So I sorted through hundreds of pages of members
Umm, wouldn't it have saved you a boatload of time to just ask; 'Hey, whats the criteria for achieving VIP status?"

BTW Mod crew, can I have a VIP?

Thanks.

There is no clear cut criteria for VIP. I have been here for 6 years now and have seen some very strange things occur.

It's a private board, owned by Alex. I've always assumed that VIP status could be assigned based on his wishes alone or on crowd/mod vote. There have been a couple of folks who started out at VIP day one.

I don't ponder the whys myself...I just continue to hope and dream of my own future spot in the VIP hot tub amongst the legends.

Well, I love it when folks challenge authority. This being said, who cares? Do I think Backstagers should be eligible for VIPhood, yeah sure. Do I care that they aren't? No, not really

People are people. Their word is what defines them, not some hogwash title. Er, no offense to the newly minted vips, you guys totally deserve it. I actually mean that. I know, I know, it sounds sarcastic, but it's not intended that way

KP, I think yer a cool dude, and I dig yer posts. And if for some insane reason I ever became a mod here, which will never happen:laugh2:, I'd totally VIP ya. Because I think yer a cool dude with an interesting story, even if we never see eye to eye on anything

Until then, questionable stuff will be questionable stuff. Eye of the beholder and all that

Think it's pretty much a given that I'll never be crowned.

I'm comfortable with the fact that I've never been banned.
That's the discipline

Believe it or not, it's not always who you know, but what you know. And many of the above people you named above are some of the world's foremost authorities on Les Pauls, and guitars in general, including some of the top vintage experts, collectors and luthiers. Not to mention some world renowned artists. Sorry, but in my mind that justifies VIP status before simply quantity of posts or longevity.

“There is something to be learned from a rainstorm. When meeting with a sudden shower, you try not to get wet and run quickly along the road. But doing such things as passing under the eaves of houses, you still get wet. When you are resolved from the beginning, you will not be perplexed, though you will still get the same soaking.

This understanding extends to everything.”

Hi KP,

I can say for sure that in the short time I'm a Mod here, we had discussed all the new VIPs in our Team, and the decision was finally made by Alex.

I can also say for sure that before my own Mod-status I had suggested a few members to get VIP status by PMing the reasons why I think they should get it to Victor, it went the same way....

I don't know all of the other ones from your list, though I'm sure there is at least 'one' reason for each of them...

Alex gives it :yesway: - and takes it :noway: ( if he wants )

Not complaining one way or another, but sometimes when I'm "here", it almost feels like I'm at work (minus the pay...though, I'd rather be here) - it seems like the more you put in, the less you get back.

But, such is life.

It won't work - if you expect to get anything back, IMO of course

I've never seen my contributions as 'work', for me it always was/is 'helping'
or at least I try...

It does seem strange when members are given VIP status almost the moment they join mlp, but if in there life they have in someway made a contribution to the world of guitars or music in general, I have seen no reason why they should not be honoured this way

having said that, I get a kick outta seeing ordinary guys given the honour, the latest are a great choice

In my world I'm the most important person I know, I don't need a forum site to tell me that. :thumb:

BTW the new VIP's IMHO are all very good choices.

some anonym :D quotes might explain a little, too

VIP’s have always been members who are known to be
helpful, post accurate information, and have never been banned.
Of course, owning a Burst, and / or selling a couple million records
never hurts either.
Alex awards VIP Status. If there is someone who you believe
is deserving of VIP, forward Alex the members name and links
to Posts and Threads that support your position.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that, that's how it works, should work, or how anyone should expect it to work.

But, as KP said, and I know this is going to sound defensive (it's not meant to be), but there are many people, very deserving of this title, but still, nothing.

Also, my comparison to 'work' was meant to be a joke. What I meant was, many of us contribute so much, yet most of it goes unrecognised. That's all.
