I picked up a nice Epi les paul special II the other day for cheap.I really like it.I have owned much higher end les pauls before,Gibson and Epiphone and a few other copies and this little Epi special II is not that bad at all for a bedroom guitar.YMMV

I have two of them, one straight stock, and one highly modded. I wish there was a section on this forum to discuss lower priced guitars. It makes little sense to buy a lower priced guitar and immediately throw 2 or 300 dollars at it.

I've got a Epiphone Les Paul Special 2 that I am extremely fond of too.
What's not to love about a well manufactured all mahogany solidbody guitar?

It was totally worth it to me to upgrade the tuners and pickups for $100 of GFS parts.
I don't think of a guitar as an investment, but as a tool to bridge the physical and metaphysical realms .

I love mine!
Maybe it's a Special I...I don't know...it has P90s.
It's my go-to couch plinker, Blues jam attender, toss it in the trunk for the weekender.
And I suppose if I could ever afford to travel by plane, I'd unscrew the neck and pop it in my suitcase.
Sometimes I gig it just for the fun of rocking the joint with a $100 guitar.

Just bought this 'limited edition' special 2 plus top. For $200, I really like this little git. Tuners suck, but that's in the process of being solved. Cheap ($6) set of no-name sealed units are en route. Can't believe Epiphone would use such trash on anything bearing their name. The low E unit barely made it through the first string change. Rest of the guitar was nice enough, though, to justify changing tuners on a brand new axe.



P.S. First LP type guitar owned (Tele's since high school). First humbucker guitar owned, as well. And, first post on your excellent forum. Most impressed with all of the above.

ok here is my story:

I just purchased a brand new Epiphone Les Paul Special II Limited edition Flame top in Heritage cherry and i am absolutely in love with it. First off let me say, I have owned every guitar known to man. Gibson Les Paul Customs, Standards, PRS's, American Fenders, Squiers, Epiphone Les paul standards, etc.. You name it i've had it. The Epiphone Les Paul Special II is my new main guitar, the only one I will play. Completely stock!

So i was trying them out and I noticed that the transparent blue one was actually the lightest weighing one so I had the GC guy open 4 boxes of the Heritage Cherry sunburst ones and no luck they were all heavier than the blue one. Went to a different location and checked the weight of the floor models, the cherry sunburst one was still heavier. Had the rep open a new box and seemed to find one that was a little lighter. Had the tech lower the action and it's all ready for show tonight. Didn't even change the strings yet!

The neck is soooo perfect and the weight is so light and playable and i can move and jump around and it feels great. I had a locking strap that planet straps make with the plastic lock and it was making the guitar a little heavier and less movable so i purchased a brand new plain Ernie ball strap. i'm thinking i'll buy a cheap new strap every couple months instead of installing strap locks which will add weight. I love how its so light. Stays in tune really good too, even with the factory strings.

I was thinking about getting a couple more of these just cause I love it so much. If I were to upgrade electronics, hardware, nut, tuners, etc.. would this add weight to the guitar? I want to keep its current weight or even make it lighter, so no heavy locking tuners and stuff. Anyone that can help me please let me know and i will post youtube videos tomorrow of the concert with me playing it!

I just can't believe the cheapest guitar out there is my favorite guitar I love it so much. I've been playing since 1995. A little plug for my band below:

Glad to see someone of the same opinion, that a guitar does not have to cost thousands of dollars to serve its purpose. A large number of iconic players started on straight out of the box guitars. It has only been of late that not only does a guitar have to cost at least $5000.00 dollars and then be modified, adding at times a few thousand more to be deemed playable. I am at a loss as to how Jimmy, Eric, or Stevie ever overcame being deprived by not having a multitude of pickups, a million capacitor potentiometer combinations, high tech input jacks, gauges of strings,
Can anyone imagine just taking a guitar without modifications, plugging straight into an amp, taking it on stage and entertaining people ? Imagine the indignities they suffered.

Played and sounded great.. Still have stock strings on it... Could have stayed in tune a lite better.. New strings and a setup all I need or do I need to replace anything to keep it in tune better?

My girlfriend just bought me a new one in trans blue for my birthday. Sweet little guitar, but the fret ends... ouch. Not sprouted, just rough. Will be polishing them up this weekend.

Cool luckily my fret ends are okay.. Do these guitars really weigh 7.9 pounds? I would have thought they were a bit lighter.

I bought a set of Grover 135N Guitar Tuners and a GraphTech PT606000 TUSQ XL Black Self-Lubricating Slotted Nut, Epiphone Style and it fixed my tuning issues. They were easy upgrades for me to do. It plays nice and stays in tune now.

If you have the "economy" tuners then any other kind will add a bit of weight.

Also, be aware that they use 8mm holes. Grovers require 10mm. Not a big deal, but a concern for some.

The only real weakness on these guitars (SG or LP Specials) is the tuners. Even if you take them off and clean them etc they're still grindy and hard to tune with.

I've drilled out the holes on a few and put better tuners on them for not much.

The Grover 135Ns are pretty lightweight, I'd go for it.
