For the binding, does it melt it or anything?

And is it strong enough for either application?

Gorilla glue expands as it drys. I wouldn't use it for any guitar repair.

beside, the wood needs to be dampened for GG to be effective.
I wouldn't use it on anything guitar related.

You can melt binding in acetone to make a matching color goo to glue or even acetone brushed directly on as it melts true binding

Model glue is what is most used

for binding?

And the neck joint franklin titebond?

I'm just finalizing things becausing I am ordering the parts tomorrow for the fingerboard to start with and then I am ordering a premade neck from emct when the fingerboard comes out good.

So Acetone for binding

That would melt it and make a kind of paste right?

Nailpolish acetone wouldn''t be strong enough?

I have made 7 string pickup cream rings by melting the scrapped rings to a paste by soaking in Acetone & then used that to make a seemless glue line putting the rings halves together.

You can use the nail polish acetone but get the pure 100% acetone one, not the one with all the other additives.

yes, Titebond will do just fine for the neck joint.

Nail Polish Remover has other junk added to it. Go to your nearest Lowes, Home Depot, Hardware store and get a quart of Acetone.

Acetone will melt most binding material. What most guys do is cut up some bnding material into small bits, place them into a glass jar and cover the
bits with acetone and tightly cap the jar. In a couple of day the acetone will melt the binding into an adhesive. Whats great about this is you'll be using the same color glue as is your binding and it will also fill any small voids.

Gorilla glue is a good strong glue but what I don't like is you need to wet the wood first & the glue explands oozing out the sides & could cause alignment problems.

Cool..

The binding is just for the fingerboard like on a special

Does the acetone smell?

and
would one strip of binding from stewmac be enough for the fingerboard and acetone paste or order 2?

Yea thanks lou, I just checked the length on stewmac.

I have one last question

What is the difference between a Les Paul Standard cutaway and a Les Paul Special cut away? I know the radius is 3/16 is smaller starting from the outside.

But what is the difference?

In my plan that I drew, I traced the outline of my Gibson Les Paul Studio, measured .25 inches from the fingerboard.

I drew from that .25 extension down to meet the rest of the cutaway, is that correct to use?

Bob,
I'm not "up" on my LP Jr. dimensions so I wouldn't be able to help you there. I'm sure someone with a little more knowledge will chime in !

Np you helped me greatly over the whole planning process for the lp special..

one thing though that really has more to do with the building of guitars.

Do you think that its foolish to build and fully prepare the fingerboard to glue to a premade neck from Bartlett wood working?

as in what if it doesn't match

Tom's neck is different then a LP Jr's neck. It wouldn't work for what you want to build.

Couple of questions:

1. Do you use binding goop for neck binding? Won't it get in the ebony and look messy?

2. What exactly is Duco cement? I live in Australia, haven't seen it here, looking for a generic brand....

Duco cement is pretty much "model airplane glue" isn't it?
