Hi all,

I came across a heavily used and abused 71 back beauty and wanted to get a feel for what a reasonable price is. The store wants 2400$..

its had a headstock break or crack, it doesnt appear to have broken all the way.
and the tuners are appear to be after market (grovers)

Its got plenty of wear/checking/back of neck worn down. That stuff doesnt bother me at all, and it sounds/plays great.

But, the question is, is that too much? Its an old guitar, but I dont know...

Thoughts?
Thanks!
James

IMO - The headstock issue would put the price below $2000

Is everything else original?

Minor headstock crack repair & changed tuners. If all the other parts are original. Knobs, guard, pickups with original covers, pots & caps. Original case. If it has a really good refret. (I'm guessing it has a refret.) Plays great.
I'm thinking top dollar $1800.

Come to find out, the pickups were a 59 and JB. Tuners and knobs were changed too.

So, basically, the guitar is worth like 1200 bucks. haha.
Think Ill be backing out of this sale. :(
I was super excited too! Ill say this, the market value for a 71 seems undecided. I see them for anywhere between 3k-6500 with original parts.
What should I be looking for? around 3 to 3500?

Was it all original? Also, any tips on where I should be looking? Most stores that have them are super expensive.

Thanks for the info!
JM

Tuners were changed to Grovers and pickups were upgraded WCR "American Steele" set. Everything else original. The guy who bought it is a member here..Very happy new owner!

^ The above LP Custom is mine... I won't be parting from it any time soon and I felt 3k was a steal for this particular instrument. You can't really go wrong with an early seventies Custom.

I bought my 71 for about $2750. Original tuners and pu's and electronics, but non-oem bridge and tailpiece. Has had a refret/refin/rebound neck. No breaks or repairs.

the market right now varies greatly. It's been worth every dollar for me.

Man! thats a nice one, and a great price. You find that one on MLP as well? Same goes for the 3k one above.
I guess the real issue with that 2400 price tag on the one I was looking at is that the headstock had broken/cracked, and didn't have the original pups. Even if you don't use them, the value/ability to go back to spec seems a heavy part of the asking price for a vintage instrument.

Thanks for the feedback, and for showing off your beauts, guys! Im officially jealous!
