It's not a glider, it is a Boing 767. Thirty-five years ago (Jul 23 1983) Air Canada Flight 143 lost power to both engines and the pilots were able to land it on a decertified airstrip that was being used as a drag strip. There are a few documentaries about the incident and there is a movie being made about.

The documentaries are as exciting as any thriller ever put out by Hollywood.

The background and after story are very interesting.

Insane landing as well. They just didn't coast on down easily. Brought her in sideways until the last moment. If there wasn't a planeload of witnesses it would be unbelievable.

There are amazing stories connected to the incident. The pilots were initially punished, now they're heroes.
While the plane was descending the copilot was continuously doing trigonometry on a pad of paper to calculate distance/rate of descent/time/speed.
Later in their careers, the pilots flew the same plane a second time.

I drove by a plane crash, well more of a plane skid off the runway at Pearson International in Toronto. All the people climbed up to the 401 highway where I was driving by and I thought "fuckin' hitchhikers" and kept going to work. Saw later that the plane burnt to the ground. No idea how many people got robbed on the highway though.
