I have come across a very nice 61 reissue SG for only 1300 in a shop, and its a 2010. Seems like a pretty good deal to me.

Any way, I prefer the larger pickguard like on the standards, so I was wondering if you could replace the small pickguard for a larger one? I know people have done this vice versa, but would it just be as "simple" as screwing new holes for the large pickguard? What about the pickups and how they are mounted, do you just take the rings out and let the large pickguard hold them in?

Thanks

I think it might be possible :hmm: You might be able to jerry-rig the pickup rings onto the large pickguard. You might have to put in new screws, but I 'spose it would be possible.

ahhhh...drilling a nice guitar??!!??

When and if you decide to sell it after adding/drilling a new bigger pick guard will lower the resale value and, believe it or not, may turn off potential buyers. I get that you like the look, cool enough but I couldn't do it, even if I liked the look better....maybe get a used late 60's reissue SG on ebay or gbase it might save you the trouble.

Here's one for less than $900...a USA made cherry with big pickup

I've seen people (like TattooedCarrot) put rings on top a large guard, but I don't know how the large guard would line up, I would think you'd have to drill into the body.

Well after looking around a little more, I found a Standard SG in a dark cherry finish, which looks amazing. No drilling involved!
