I'm surprise Gibson is starting to come around with this oddity of model. I think its one of the rare lesser known guitars that sound great and Gibson finally does a RI. My only complaint is not having the active Moog electronics. I wonder if there was a compromise or the fact that they cant get Moog parts anymore. I mean sure they could use some other active parts but I always wonder......

It's cheaper to build it like that.

plus these days Gibson seemingly has NO IDEA what the masses want, so im sure they arent willing to take a gamble on making it a special edition w/moog electronics and such.....

I could see the RD with Gibson in-house active pickups, certain switches like the original and making it a Gibson USA model mainstay. That would be nice but I guess you're right, they care more about guys who can make em money than guys who can make a RD reissue properly.

They never sold a lot of the artist models when thy were originally produced, they were expensive and players saw them as being complicated, so gibson have now re released the rd now as a economy model

I think it was smart to release it as an "economy" model. I don't know if they weren't selling so they had that stupid deal of the day but it seems like it got people's attention and maybe they'll become more popular.

I think most people that would want an RD would be younger and just like the shape (and the fact that it's a Gibson). Most people wouldn't know what to do with the active electronics or even care about them.

I had a '78 Standard, all natural maple. It was a killer guitar. I'd love to hear the mahogany version, I'd probably like it even more. I juts wish they had put trapezoids on the fret board for this RI.

And the Moog electronics suck, IMO. Complicated and not really what most people are looking for these days.

Hi. I played an artist when it first came out. We were all after "maximum sustain" at the time so I had to try one. My local guitar shop received one. I do not recall being seduced by the Moog electronics. From the back of my memory the compressor did sound a bit like the "magic finger" (or something like that) electro harmonix sustainer pedal I had at the time (which was not very good, I'd say "cold" even "cheesy" not a real compressor ). The compressor that came with the LAB series amp (also by Moog I believe) was better. The Ibanez compressor I bought later had a much better sound according to my taste. This may explain why Gibson is reluctant to come up with a reissue.
I have no memories of the expander, the other Moog device included ... sorry but that was around '77 or '78. A long time ago.

For $700 during the very short MF Stupid Deal, it was a no brainer. I picked up a trans amber and it is VERY nice.
Resonates like hell! Sounds great plugged in, or not! I plan on keeping the RD Reissue cased and play it very little for the time being. This thing is heavy and has a beastly "D" 50's neck profile. Killer sustain and blues lead tone out of the Neck pup. Ran it through my Boogie and a Blues Jr. Sweet through both. I needed another guitar like I need a 4th nipple, but I just couldn't pass up this odd ball genuine american made Gibson at that ridiculous price.

Its over 30 years later and with better technology I could see the RD housing some better technology. Active pickups or something with piezo in the saddles that would be nice

I've loved their shape for the longest time, since I was a kid seeing Paul Stanley heft one. That they've gotten rid of the active electronics and gone to a passive suite only makes it more attractive in my book.

Gibson releasing this in their lower price bracket was genious.

Us working musicians and weekend warriors dont have to break the bank to have a quality instrument.

Are these gloss nitro finishes?

My only concern was that as a standard model, it coulda used neck binding!

:D

When was this stupid low deal? I've been looking online and it doesn't seem anywhere has them anymore.

search the forum. The date the thread started is the ONLY day they were at such a low price.

Musicians friend does this everyday.

they pick a random piece of gear and blow it out for 24hrs

What a beast! It's as heavy as my 76 Norlin Deluxe. I bought an RS vintage upgrade kit while they're on sale, in case I decide to keep it.:hmm:
I feel compeled to post pic's again
