-What?!? You mean that you actually have to adjust your gear to get it sounding better??? Who da thunk! Too many people don't realize that a simple tweak of a setting on your amp or your guitar could make a huge difference. Just replace whatever and all will be good. Right???

I got me a pair of handwound Wolfetone Marshall pickups for 200 bucks on their 10th anniversary sale. You can do much, much better than Gibson.

So the guy at the store told you the Epi pickups were not good?

Now you have to replace them?

Have you tried deciding for yourself whether they're good or not?

Good comment. The store manager thought they weren't good so he could sell you some pickups - is there something you're not getting from the stockers that you want?

Exactly. I have had several Epis with the stock pickups and have never felt they were poor at all.

Just last night I bought a pair of Burstbucker Pro's for my Epi LP Standard, so I can let you know how the sound once I've installed them.
I did my research and and Pro's got some great reviews by punters putting them into Epi LP's.

Here's a nice link with the output power of each set of PUP's Gibson do.

I'm just back from band rehearsal - we do classic rock covers like Cream, Zep, Hendrix and that.
I took two guitars - my Epiphone LP Standard (DiMarzio PAF bridge, Duncan A2Pro neck) and my Gibson faded Studio (Burstbuckers).

It was very, very obvious which guitar sounded the best and it wasn't the Gibson. I always knew my Epiphones sounded fantastic because I always swap the pickups for Duncans or DiMarzios but now I've confirmed it for myself. Gibson pickups aren't for me. I'm gonna have to stick an A2Pro set in my Gibson I think.

Try it with a Gibson Standard,Classic,or Custom you would have different results. To me the Studio has always been pretty much a nitro finished USA made Epi anyways.

Hang on - aren't you the guy that's always saying Gibson pickups are crap? Now I agree with you you're saying it's my guitar, not the pickups, that's crap?

Okay....:thumb:

It's a faded Studio BTW, but why am I bothering with this anyway?

I'll get back to you when I need to spend 3 grand on a "real" Gibson to get a decent tone.

BTW snobbery about "best gear" is silly. Especially when you're using a Valvestate!

I have a few new Epi's, the Firebird V RI, the '61SG Maestro RI, the 59 Les Paul Ltd edition RI. I put Seymour 59's in the SG. Then changed them back.
The Firebird Pups are Fantastic and so are the '59 LP RI pups. The P-90's that came in the new Green 'worn' SG sucked. That got Duncan's. So did the pups in the new Epi Korina wood V and Explorer. They got Seth Lovers, and 1 meg pullpots for OOP, S/P and coil split.
Hit or miss with Epi Pups. Some of them are really good. Some suck.

Reading the subject I thought you meant that Gibson was going to start sending the guitars out for the same price with no pickups, then you can buy the pickups separately then pay to have them installed. This would seemingly allow you to put in any pickups you want, and allow Gibson another revenue stream. Oops, don't want to give them any ideas...

2022 Epiphone pickups sound better than 2010, when this thread was happening.

The P-90's that came in the new Green 'worn' SG sucked.
If that is so to you, I'd bet anything you didn't bother adjusting their height. Epiphone P90s are stellar, as good as any.
