I own historics and usa les pauls and I am familiar with how they can vary in weight. I got a line on a deluxe at guitar center, for a very cheap price of $750 repaired headstock. My question concerns the weight. The studio deluxe guitars are supposed to be weight relieved. This gutiar is very light, at 8lbs 2oz. I have never played a weight relieved guitar that weighs so little. Every weight relieved guitar I've played has been at least 9lbs or more. You would think the studio models would be heavier (at least 9lbs) because of the less expensive mahogany that I assume Gibson uses for this line of guitar. Could this guitar actually be chambered? (we know how gibson can do some strange things when making a les paul). Are most studio models usually this light? My gibson usa 1992 stnd. and traditinal pro 50 are at least a pound heavier than this deluxe. why would gibson make the higher end les pauls weigh more than the lower line studio les pauls?. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

The weight will depend strongly on the density of the mahogany used, which can vary quite a bit depending on the age of the tree, the part of the tree it was sawn from and the growing conditions. In other words, it is quite possible to have a weight-relieved body at 8lbs 2oz. And yes, the tone will be different than one that weighs 10 lbs; note that I said "different", not "better" or "worse".

They do this bec it makes the guitar sound better just bec they are heavier. You cant have a cheap line of guitars like a studio sound as good as your flagship models now can you?

You can compensate for volume on lighter guitars with pick ups and amps with 11 on the knobs, but you cant simulate the tone of a denser piece of more expensive wood that is generated from the very core structure of the wood itself.

The classic LP sound to me is fat and wood heavy. You don't get fat and wood heavy with all the models of an LP. Some probably shouldn't even be called Les Pauls to be honest about it. I love my 68 Custom LP

There is variation in weight on all Gibson Les Paul models, Standards, Customs, Historics, Traditionals and Studios, it is because of variation in the density in the wood, this is why it is best to have the guitar in your hands to examine and play before buying as no two are the same.

They are definitely NOT chambered. Weight-relieved only.

I have a 50s Deluxe Studio and it is weight relieved .Its heavier than the chambered versions.Weight relieved doesnt make it a cheaper guitar by that alone.I have played my Studio Deluxe thru the same amp as our other guitar player who has a 10 yr old Classic and there isnt a noticeable difference in tone. The Studio Deluxes are the real deal without the bling.
