Hi to All,
I want advice as to which Guitar is better the 1959 Reissue or the R9. Below are my queries:

The listed two guitars as 1959 Reissue.
A) Gibson Les Paul 1959 Reissue - eBay (item 270439681347 end time Aug-17-09 22:00:00 PDT)
The seller claims in his item description as R9........IS IT REAL R9....as the serial number is not visible.........I have very little knowledge about R9, it should start the Serial number with 9 xxxx....PS correct me if I am wrong.

B)1986 GIBSON LES PAUL 1959 REISSUE - NO RESERVE - eBay (item 280382980591 end time Aug-15-09 13:58:11 PDT)

I see the serial number starting with number 6 xxxxx

SECOND QUERY:
Gibson Custom Shop R9 Les Paul flame top 59 re-issue
Gibson Custom Shop R9 Les Paul flame top 59 re-issue - eBay (item 190327525952 end time Aug-16-09 17:14:57 PDT)
Q: Is this a real R9? I cannot view the serial number.

So the final Question is is 1959 Reissue is better or the R9 better as per above listed options.

Regards,
Sanjay

The 86 model is considered a pre-historic re-issue and does not have the long neck tenon therefore is arguabley inferior .The Historic series IE: R9 began manufacture in late 93 and are more accurate and were built by the newly formed custom shop. From 2006 they started the even more accurate VOS (vintage original spec.) models which have the accurate nitro finish. and have also been computer plec'd. 59 Re-issue or 59 RI or R9 are all the same thing . as long as they were made after late 1993 and have R9 stamped in the control cavity. and a 5 digit serial number starting in 9.

I take issue with your interpretation of VOS. In fact Gibson put MORE plastic in their finishes in 2006. And you can still get a glossy Les Paul and they are not referred to as VOS.

Yeah I know they still make the glossy non VOS models too. But are'nt the VOS's Nitro thin authentic finishes ?

From Harmony Central:

Gibson Custom Shop announced the launch of the Vintage Original Spec™ series of historic solid body guitars. From the 1957 Les Paul Junior to the 1960 Les Paul Standard, the Custom Shop has produced several reissue models.
Using a combination of traditional hand craftsmanship and modern technology, the luthiers of the Custom Shop painstakingly reproduce the key elements that define a cool, vintage instrument-stunning looks, flawless playability, and unsurpassed tone.
The Vintage Original Spec series, or V.O.S., has a new, proprietary finishing process which yields the gently aged patina of a vintage classic. Also, a revolutionary handcrafting process enhances comfort and playability guitars. Solid mahogany back, historically accurate long neck tenon for superior strength and sustain, period correct neck profiles, hardware and electronics, and 100% nitro-cellulose lacquer are among some of the features offered in the Gibson Custom V.O.S. series.

They are not the same finish as a real 1959. There are plasticizers in the nitro despit Gibsons claims. As for thickness of the finish, I have no idea how thick it is compared to the old bursts.
