I searched the threads here, and elsewhere, and went to Gibson's website...
yet, nothing that I can find regarding the Gibson ES-339 serial numbering system.

The ES-339 has been out since 2007 and I have not seen anyone
with the secret decoder ring for these guitars.

Anyone have special Gibson knowledge on how to decode
the serial numbers of a Gibson ES-339?

What am I missing?

From the Gibson website:

Gibson Support - Serial Number Search

Custom Shop regular production models
CSYRRRR
CS stands for "Custom Shop"
Y indicates the production year
RRRR indicates the guitar's place in the sequence of production

Example: CS10845 is the 845th reg. production CS model produced in 2001.

Although your ES-339 was made in the Memphis Custom Shop, I believe that it has a custom shop regular production number.

Since it's a 2007, I assume that your serial number begins CS7 and the last four digits are its place in the sequence of regular production CS models produced in 2007.

I want a 339 badly....I think it's what I've been missing.

Though they're "Custom Shop" models, is it true they do not come with "typical" case candy for CS guitars?

Mine came with COA, Gibson logo picks, cord, polishing cloth and truss rod wrench.

Nice responses. Thanks.

I read the Gibson Custom Shop serial number page. Guess I took it too literally. CS YRRRR indicated 5 digits not six.

It seem the ES-339 went from a 5 digit serial number to a 6 digit serial number. I assume that there were so many made it had gotten to six digits?

I haven't picked one up yet, but getting close. Was curious because what
what Gibson says about their serial numbering doesn't seem to apply to the ES-339.

So an ES-339 6 digit Serial number that starts with a Zero (ie., CS050449) would be made in 2010?

I believe that you are correct.

I have a 2007 regular production (custom shop) custom with a serial number that is "CS" plus 5 digits beginning with 7, and

I have a 2011 regular production (custom shop) custom with a serial number that is "CS" plus 6 digits beginning with 1.

As you'll see on the Gibson site (link I provided above), it appears that it's not that unusual for Gibson to add digits to their serial numbers.

The longer I am aware of the numbering system the more confused
I can get. It appears the exception is the rule.

Sharing any information on this thread has helped in all categories, not just
the Gibson Serial Number issue.

I probably just didn't open my eyes wide enough. I read and re-read
Gibson's Serial Number treatise and still didn't see the forest for the trees.

No big whoop but the serial numbers can be of use when buying a Gibson.
Not always the end-all but just one more piece of info to complete the GAS
procedure.
