I have a client who's LP I brought back from a bad burn in a house fire.

Repair Thread is here:
http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/luthiers-corner/189049-hot-les-paul-headstock-restoration.html

He sent me an email stating he's ready for new body binding and a refin.
Here's the thing. He want's a Gibson Custom Shop color consisting of a Candy Apple Red Metallic over the entire guitar. He say's that in either 82 or 83, Gibson had a LP Standard in this color. I did a Google search but came up empty. Does anyone have any info on this color ?

I believe you make it a gold top then spray transparent cherry over the gold until it is the shade of red you want.

Well, Lou, if you guys were really close, you'd buy that guitar you linked and then just copy
that color. I mean....I'm just sayin', there weren't any updates saying "sold" I don't think.

I think I've seen one of these, but of course that offers no help at all to what you need.
Funny, because I remember the one I saw thinking it must've been a "refin", lol.

Hard to tell from the photos...is it a gold or silver metallic base ?

That example sure looks like it has a silver base. Candy apple can be done using either gold or silver as a base, but again, that one looks like silver to me.

I agree with the silver.

Gold metallic base would give the candy a deeper, mellower hue.

You probably couldn't find CAR listed as a catalog color because Gibson called it "Sparkling Burgundy." According to Carl H's website (guitarhq.com), the base coat was always silver (as opposed to Fender, whose base coat changed over time between silver and gold).

Note that your '82-83 would have had a polyurethane finish, not nitro.

Thanks for the info Bill...Every bit helps.
Sparkling Burgundy was a Custom Color offered in the early 60's but if memory serves me correctly that's an opaque and not transparent color.

If you give me some time, I have photos of cans of paint from the Kalamazoo factory somewhere. I just have to find them

I think I was confused about which factory had the paint. I would guess Nashville used the same supplier but can't say what K'zoo used. I could find out though I suppose.
