The Babe or the Shanks are no options for you? I bought my Shanks when it hit the store, got a good discount because they did not even have to unpack or store it and it's a fantastic guitar. No friend of too much red as well, but it plays and sounds just great

Gibson Historic then send to Historic Makeovers for their RDS package: Everything I've seen come from HM is absolutely amazing. I would find a really nice used or new historic that I like, then send it off for the whole treatment. I just worry that I wouldn't get anything out if I ever needed to sell. I would probably have them do another R7 for me, but unlike my current one, have creme plastics and a Bigsby. Or maybe even an R7 Custom...

This part of your post tells me that you are not short of cash. If you can stretch those funds a bit more, have you thought about buying a "player grade" 52/53 Les Paul (possibly a refin) and sending it to HM?
You have mentioned resale value.
Looking at both forums over the past few years suggests to me that demand for guitars like this is stronger than anything else I can think of. You could buy the real PAFs/Pat No pickups later....

HM makeover > aged CC series > CC VOS > aged Gibson historic > historic

fixed your list:
53/54 to 57-60 conversion > HM makeover > aged CC series > CC VOS > aged Gibson historic > historic.

If you want a keeper and have the budget, get a 53/54 Les Paul that has been converted to humbuckers (preferrably PAFs or early PAT#'s w/ long magnets). It will be the closest to the real thing you can get. You'll also be more likely to get the big neck you want.

I'd love to get a conversion... I just have to find one that's priced right, but more importantly, done right. I think I could get an R8 and send to HM with some new electronics and hardware for around $7,500 - maybe even less. I see conversions usually a little higher than that... I would totally go for a 53/54 to 57 conversion though, that would be sweet!
