Getting ready for a family visit from England has kind of slowed the build progress a little. But "stripe" is coming along nicely. Top is carved, neck, fingerboard on, bridge and tailpiece installed, the PAF's from Bandonwound have arrived. The next part will be the fun part, and really the whole point of the build, making the finish look like the original!

The yellow is a good start.

Of course amber topcoats are a key too.....but so is fading the intensity out of the yellow too. The real bursts sort of have a straw colour left in the centre but then with the amber topcoats.

Of course real UV darkened clear is ideal.....there just something about it that simple amber dye cannot recreate.

So I started on the finish ageing....forearm wear, wear between the pick-ups, various dings (even a burn hole) in the binding and left over color from the pick guard (that will be knocked back a little and made a little more brown).
have to wait a couple of days before I do the lacquer checking....

That was a really nice looking guitar at first. Why would you make it look like crap with fake "aging" etc?

Don't really want to get into the "relic" argument. It wouldn't be much of a tribute if it looked bugger all like the original now would it!!

Wow, that is fantastic work. I wish I had the space so I could try my hand at a build like that.

What are you using for pups?

Aged Brandonwound PAF replicas, I have used them a number of times (in PAT and T-Top version as well) and for me are the best sounding /value for money vintage style humbuckers out there.

well I took a slight step backwards, once I had polished out the top /started the ageing...wasn't too happy with the shape of the carve (the transition from the curve to the pick up plane looked too abrupt, like a table top) and the color was just too yellow.
So I sanded it off , touched up the carve and spent a day messing with colors. So a mix of lemon yellow, amber, vintage maple and golden brown gave me a much more authentic color, it appears darker in shade /low light, but in the sun it appears more yellow and still shows significant figuring.
It'll sit 7-10 days now before I move forward.

Stellar stuff! Nice job on both finishes, and nice dedication to 'getting it right'. I don't know if I would have had the commitment to sand of the first finish for detail work and tweaking. This will be great!
