G string Tuning

My G string goes out of tune all the time...when I re-tune it, it goes "ping" and gets back in tune...not a serious issue...but enough to annoy me...I know about the nut-sauce...but is there a permanent fix to this? The setup, action and intonation seems fine...replacing the nuts seems bit drastic...

Get the nut slot cut right.

Yeah, thinking about replacing the nut if I have to take it in...is it a big deal to get the slot cut right? If I do that, should I just have them replace the nut with bone? Any one have bone? I've had good and bad experience with bone but never put one on an electric...Any comments of Tusq for Gibsons? I have that in my Fender and I like it...but didn't want to do anything to the Gibson to mess up the Plek thing they do to it...

I use nut lube on all of my guitars. If the nut is OK, the lube will stop the occasional ping..

I've got a bone nut on my Traditional, and it's great, although not necessarily better than the original other than being cut properly.

Don't worry about messing up the plek job, most LP's can be improved greatly with a proper set up - my action was ridiculously high with the original plek setup. I think the general consensus is that Gibson don't use the plek machine properly anyway. It's much more rewarding to take a bit of time and set up the guitar to your preference.

lube the nut & I'd guess you'd be fine. You can use a pencil as the graphite will work perfectly as nut lube.

I may be losing my mind but I always found the G to be most likely to go out on the Gibson Headstock design....wierd although probably just the most likely string to bend....

you could try a wound G, i find they stay in tune much easier than the plain G's. that and some nut sauce. remember to reset the intonation for the wound G if you decide to go that route, as it will surely be a different gauge than what you have on there now.

i use the d'addario 11-49 set which has a wound G (22 gauge). very stable strings.

you could also try this method of stringing, the "under-over" method, which acts a s a clamp on the string:

Yeah, if it pings, the nut slot is too tight. Just because it was plekked, doesn't mean it was cut for your strings? Just as is always the case, your g-string might be bigger than the next guys.... Ain't that just always the case? Least-ways as we get older...

Anyway, get the slot filed out a hair and you should be good.

I also have found the g-string goes out of tune more often on all my 3 on a side headstocks faster than 6 on a sides.

There's definitely something about the G string nut slot which makes it most likely to have tuning problems. 2 of my 4 LPs have issues with the nut on the G string, but that might me just bad luck on my part - although when I bought my last LP the guy in the shop said that Gibson are notorious for poorly cut nuts and that it's always the G string.

I wonder if it is because the G is the thickest of the strings that isn't wound. Wound ones, because of their grooving, will naturally enlarge a nut slot easier than plain strings and so the wound strings will eventually naturally remedy themselves...

Why its always the G string in most guitars?, i've been questioning that for years

Also, in addition to my comment above about it being the thickest unwound strung, is it perhaps because the G string has the furthest distance from tuning peg to nut (of the unwound strings), so there is a greater amount of force being exerted onto the nut, making it more likely to ping?

My G goes out faster on all my electrics, probably because I bend the shit out of it.
