hello fellow tone freaks !!
i am currently running a BYOC silicon fuzz,
and am kind of unhappy with the tone i am currently getting.
i found out eric johnson uses bc183 in his FF.

anyone have any experience on the tone?
and if i can just replace the bc180 trannies with the 183's?
or do i need to do some soldering?

THANKS :dude:

U will probably have to do some soldering and along as the bc183 is npn it should be an easy switch and maybe just a little re biasing

yes the current transistors are just in their sockets.
the thing is, there are so many different options when it comes
to trans. in fuzz faces.
i stumbled up on a very interesting article, maybe i will get to building this
someday as it looks quite awesome and fun {:
The Multi-Face

anyone else have something to say about fuzz? or transistors (silicon)??

(i find my current sound out of the FF a little squashy and, for lack of a better word, un-exciting. i want more sustain, warmth, and musicality)
let the germanium comments begin ! :D

The Multi-Face is a great project.

Like guitar_slinger8 said, switching the BC180's out for the BC183's shouldn't be a big deal if they're both NPN's and they're socketed. Biasing may be a factor. Then you'd have to do some soldering. Just check the datasheet for both transistors to match the pinouts. Not all trans are the same. Here's the BC183:

Might want to measure the Hfe with a multimeter also to see how they compare. If you want to go NPN germanium, you could try 2N388, 2N1304, AC127 or AC187's. Check SmallBear for their germanium pairs also:

Again, biasing may be an issue.
