A lot of us in the MIJ circle also have Historics, so we have good comparison opinions... but again, they are just that- our opinions! That said.. if you get a good R8, you will not be disappointed. But, I tried several Historics before I found an R9 that I could justify spending the huge $$ on that one. My R7, I feel I completely fortunate to get the guitar I did blind, as it was an ebay purchase. Conversely, I don't think I have ever been anything less than thrilled with any high-end vintage MIJ Les Paul that I have purchased.

Here are my R7 and R9. My comparison of the three? Each one is as sweet as the next, they are just different from each other.

The appeal for me with the high end MIJ vintage guitars is all about the quality. The major players in the late 70s recognized the musicians frustration with changing specs and lower quality from the traditional manufacturers and saw an opportunity to make high quality instruments to fill the gap.

IMO the high end guitars made during this time are the best guitars you can buy for the money. They were made with high quality timber to very high standards, and they have 30+ years of aging on them. Prices are steadily rising though so the bang per buck won't last forever.

I've never owned a Gibson or Fender but have tried many. I just couldn't justify spending that much money considering the MIJ alternatives. And I could care less about the name on the headstock so my olmy concern is with the price/quality ratio, if you can get a good R8 for the same money as an LS80 then that goes out the window. Here in Australia cheap Gibsons are quite rare though.

These late 70's/early 80's Tokai LS-80's really are astonishing guitars...just a brilliant consistent feel up and down the neck and the body carves are beautiful. They were late 50's replicas made by hand by luthiers who took pride in their work.

I've never had someone play my '78 LS-80 and say "Yeah, cool man. Nice LP copy..." and move on. Every one of my friends or players I meet and chat with at gigs, they always give it a quick strum, then the shock sets in and they strum it slowly... They feel the neck, hold it out and look it up and down a few times, eyeball some part of it, then play it again and say with feeling "My God. That. Is. Amazing".
