Sorry for my ignorance, but because it's socketed, will I be able to just pop it out and stick in a new one? What would be the best way to do it?

Yep, pop it out with a flathead and put the new one in. The circle in the top left corner shows you where the first pin is, so be sure to line up the other chip the same way.

Ha, I was going to call tomorrow just to see if they will be open. I bet they probably won't have any idea what I'm talking about... It's close enough for me to swing by and look though, so I'll probably do that.

Thanks for the offer. I'd like to be able to fix it myself if possible, but if not, I know another guy who should be able to help. I may message you if we can't figure the thing out. :thumb:

There's really not much to figure out, swap the TL071 and that'll probably fix the problem.... If it doesn't then you'll need to change that 10uF tantalum capacitor. (Will require some soldering)

There's nothing else on that board that is polarity sensitive and there is essentially zero chance that you opened up one of those 2.2M resistors.

The last time I was in Radio Shack, I had to show them what a spade lug was, but no luck. I found what I needed at an auto supply down the street. Guitar content: I was swapping out a speaker in a 1x12 that had the wires soldered, and wanted to add spade lugs.

The trick with RadioShack is to tell them you're doing just fine and that you don't need any help :laugh2:

Just cruise over to where they have the drawers of parts and look for the drawer with pictures of what looks like chips on it (I forgot how they label the drawers anymore).

But if you're OK with waiting: TL071CP Low-Noise JFET-Input Operational Amplifier

$0.68 plus like $1.29 for shipping :)

Last time I was in a Radioshack, they didn't have a TL071 but they did have a TL081.
That's a drop in replacement.

Great, thanks for the advice.

I actually haven't had any issues shopping at RadioShack. The employees I've encountered have generally left me alone unless I've asked them for help. Works for me.

The last time I went to one, I bought a fuse for the 5F1 amp kit I built last year. The guys at that store asked about the project and thought it was pretty cool. Hopefully the location I go to this week will have a similar selection of parts and friendly staff.

Found and bought a TL082 at my local RadioShack. I pulled up the TI data sheets for this part and the original on my phone, and from a quick glance, they look like they have similar schematics. Maybe this will get the job done? I won't be home to try until the end of the day, so feel free to correct my thinking if I'm wrong.

Order the correct part. The IC you bought has a different pin layout and you don't want anymore damage..

Very true. I just ordered an exact replacement, so I bet I'll have it by the end of the week. Hopefully this is all I need to swap! Wouldn't be fun to have to take the cap off the board.
