On the Janka hardness scale, suitable fretboard woods like hard maple are at @1450 where as non suitable SA Mahogany(at least I've never seen it) is @850.

What is the generally accepted minimum hardness?

The reason I ask is cause I've come across a nice piece of lacey Sycamore-which I thought was a maple species but when I looked it up,it was not hard at all.

Wear resistance, durability and rigidity. When the wood is well seasoned does it maintain stability and will it finish smooth and remain smooth.
Those are attributes that would be important.
I am not familiar with lacy sycamore, if it is the same as Australian Lace wood the right piece might make a very suitable fingerboard.

Thanks, it's good to be back. Though I have recently recieved a new wave of orders, at least the summer "Honey Do" list is out of the way.
