So I am doing a take on a Frankstrat design for my daughters school. Which I have never tried.
Question is, do you;
I am using an automotive base/clear system.
1) wet sand to level paint lines
2) leave em and clear
3) leave em and try to build up clear and level clear???

Any help is appreciated.

Eddie used rattlecan acrylic lacquer from the bicycle shop.

There's a masking guide out there somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

Look at pics of the black & white version. Start with painting the body black, mask, then paint white.

If going for the full RWB, study the finished product, mask over the BW, and paint red.

I attempted a couple a while back. Not really satisfied with the results, but it was a learning experience.

If you are going for that authentic relic’d look, use rattle cans. If you want that brand new, never been played, fresh from a professional, factory finish, go with base coat/clear coat and level sand the lines out. Smooth as glass.

To me, the latter defeats the purpose. That guitar is supposed to look like it was runnin‘ with the devil.

I’d like to build one like this. Found it on the net somewhere. I believe it is padauk, maple, and ebony.

yes I am good with the masking process, I just curious about the "ridges" I kinda want it smooth, at least the top.

Eddie's method.

1. Paint (acrylic rattle can)
2. Tape
3. Paint
4.Tape
5. Remove tape

That's it.

I did one in the '80s with a cheap Strat copy.
I just sprayed it black.Wrapped it with masking tape, then sprayed it white, bit more tape and then sprayed it red. Took the tape off and played ito death.
No clear, no sanding or polishing at any stage.
I'm fairly confident that'd be how EVH did the original. I suspect Kramer did the job properly when they made 'em for him.

Thanks for all the input. I like I said it is for a fund raiser for my daughters school. So it will be in the school colors, blue, silver & white. I am not going to sand but I am going to clear it, specialy if some one wants to make it a wall hanger. I will post pics when I am done painting, probably in a week or so. I should be able to knock it out with the whole social distancing. Stay healthy my friends. :)

That came out cool!

I love the faded gray, and how that contrasts.

Will this get the mini control cover of Eddie's red/white/black?
