So can someone be clear this up for me? Is this the 54 Les Paul?

I have been reading this thread for a month or so but it was either a 54 or a Norlin. Sorry if I sound stupid.

Either on this forum or the other, I believe that the employees at Gibson said the routs in the control cavities were correct for a 54. I would also like a concrete answer.

Here you can see the remains from the 54 routing

Ben thank you for posting this pic, now I see the smile end of the tenon. These were more common in 57-61 LP's. There have been earlier guitars with a smile tenon, but I haven't seen a 54 to this date that didn't have squared off corners. Also cool to see the Duncan labels. :thumb:

Congratulations Benwave. Epic thread, incredible story. :applause:

Epic is so often misused, but I can't think of a more appropriate moniker for this thread.

noting or pertaining to a long poetic composition, usually centered upon a hero, in which a series of great achievements or events is narrated in elevated style

What a cool thread. That guitar has been iconic to me and millions of others...

Not some judgement errors but a lot.

Let's move on, I'm not the only one that had doubts. With several guys on this forum including myself that know about 50's Customs, had we seen pics of the control cavity and the recent neck pickup cavity picture we would not have doubted the said guitar. I see why your upset, that's fine, but understand from the experts perspective, if we had pictures it would have been a different story.

The reward guitar serial number PF686

I'm calling shens. That is NOT a '54. :D

Very cool story. Benwave, I hope we haven't soured your outlook here. You knew what you had but we didn't. And while I understand, to a point, why you withheld some pictures, it did leave us with less to go on. There have been a number of under-the-bed-'59 stories that have come up over the years, and often they end up being something else. Nothing personal about it, but there's a strong "Trust but verify" stance that exists. Either the items stands up to scrutiny or it doesn't.

I was referring to "Mojo" withdrawals :thumb:
Money wouldn't been an issue for me either.
2 years of having that gem in hand......
I'd be missing her for sure.

I know I started off doubting, but after looking at a lot of pics and coming up with theories on why the board looked wrong (but matched the found guitar) I surely came on board with the guitar.

Very fun find, and great for Peter Frampton!

Reason why is that all the speculation was about it getting reboarded in the late 70's and in fact it was done before Frampton got the guitar. The last video I saw proved to me that the board was indeed done before he got it. It's tough from my shoes as I view guitars as being original to it's year. After all the pictures that have been posted throughout this thread shows that from 54, the said guitar went through a lot of changes even before Peter got the guitar. Like I said I am eating Crow, I have admitted that I made some judgement errors. I will make sure to not jump to conclusions in the future until all the evidence is in.

I don't think much harm has been done. If guys like you start to be hesitant to throw in another opinion then both forums will be poorer places. I remember a thread about a goldtop where you were the first person to notice that something was "off". I bet that threads "chewing over" various guitars have saved some people from expensive mistakes and enormous heartache.

More spelling errors than a 10th-grade book report.
It says it's the mobile edition. It was probably written on a Blackberry. I notice the article quotes Peter as saying "some minor repairs are needed". I see a new relic series in the near future.
