I was just home for a short visit to my parents and came across 2 boxes of valves that my dad gave me 14 years ago when I first got a valve amp. Of course they didnt fit my JCM 800 back then. Does anyone know what amps any of these might fit?, some of them appear unused.

This is the pick of just the mullard valves there are a few of other manufactures not in this shot.

The ECCC82 is the same as a 12AU7 and can be used in the preamp of most amps. It is the same as a 12AX7 with less gain. All "ECCC81, ECCC82, ECCC83, are 12A**7 type preamp tubes, it's just the European number for them.
The ECCC83 is the same exact thing as a 12AX7.
As far as the rest of the tubes I cant make out the label on many of them, but the ones I can see don't look like anything of the most common guitar amp tubes.

If theres some el84's in there, we may have to talk :)

A Mullard El84 will say 6BQ5 on it for the tube type. There are also date codes and tube type codes AND batch, factory/country, and change codes....but 6BQ5 would be a dead giveaway.:thumb:

True.

OP, there's a guy names MartyStrat54 on the Marshall forum, that can tell you all about them. Haven't seen anyone on here that can touch his tube knowledge.

Actually 6BQ5 is the US designation for EL84 so a European tube will say EL84 not 6BQ5.

Just FYI the first number in the US designator is the number of volts the tube requires so a 12AX7 requires 12 volts while a 6BQ5 only uses 6 volts, etc.

My father in law has a few huge boxes of old tubes in his basement ... been meaning forever to go through them when I get the time - I told him to inventory them and eBay them - he owns no tube based devices, he just hoards old stuff...LOL. BUT, I want to go through them before he does any selling off..... there may be treasure, there :)

On the bottom of the tubes there is a code. Its in darker letters and has a row of numbers and letters on top of another...looks like this

rX1
B8J

This is the way only Philips tubes are coded(Mullard, Amperex, Valvo, and so on)
The "rX" is the tube type and indicates an EL84...The "B" stands for the Blackburn factory . The "8" is the last digit of the year, unless it was before 1956, then there is a whole other set of rules.:laugh2:
If you want to learn about these codes, here is a great link

They can be pretty confusing, but if you are buying NOS tubes it worth it to know a little about them.

I have an Amperex 12AT7 tube that I am wondering about. I tried to look over the document you posted Rick, but it totally gives me tired head so I thought I would see if you can decode it for me.

Most of the silk screen label has rubbed off but it does still have the bugle boy symbol, and the code at the bottom in grey is just the triangle (the one listed as phillips, harleen [10th from the bottom on pic below) followed by 02

I wish I could find someone locally who could test all my tubes and tell me if they test strong. All of them were used when I got them so I have no way of knowing for sure.

Nice necro-post! :D

Thank you. It was not really my intent and I did not even notice the year that this post had last been touched but I remembered that I had seen RH1 had posted some tube ID info recently and when I did a search, this one popped up so I grabbed it. I think the Phaze thread was also in there but sifting through that monster thread seemed like more work than just pulling a Lazarus with this one.

I really have to start looking at the dates on these things.:laugh2:

At least I resized the pic link above so that it would not need to be scrolled down to find the code.
