I took my floyd rose equipped schecter to a local music store to get my guitar set up . I was getting some bad fret buzz and wanted a slightly thicker string gauge . I went from 10-46 to 10 -52 I believe . Skinny top heavy bottom strings

When I brought it back from the shop . the string height seemed kind of high . I didn't get to play it because I had to go to work right after .

So now that I have had a chance go play it . It plays well but the string height at the bridge looks kind of high . Is this normal for a Floyd rose type guitar ? It seems quite high . It doesn't seem to limit my playing and the fret buzz is mostly all gone. Had I known I had to raise it that high I would've just set it up myself ! Lol

I'd say that's higher than typical.

The bottom of the bottom plate on my own Floyded axes sit dead level with the top of the guitar, but that's how I build them because that's how I like them. Compared to that yours looks a touch high, but not ridiculously so. I've seen some that are a lot higher than that.

If the guitar plays good, and you are happy with the action on the fretboard, then it's fine. There's no hard and fast rule. The right height is the height where it plays well for you, doesn't buzz, and stays in tune :)

You said the buzz is "mostly" gone. Being that high and having any buzz at all tells me that they could have done a better job setting it up.

The buzz before was pretty bad that it came through on the amp . Now it's slight in some places but at least it's not coming through the amp . I also believe they could've done a bit better for $50.

For a $50 setup, I'd expect lower action than that or a recommendation for additional work. When I was doing setups, I wouldn't have had that guitar go out with action that high unless it was a customer request. It's bad for business.

That store is closing down in a few months I think. So I guess you're right. They have 2 other stores though .

Should I give them a call or take it back ?

I'd see if I couldn't get them to get it lower, and if they can't, for fifty bucks they should have been able to tell you why (needs fret level, twist in neck, etc).

Pix kinda look high, but what's more important is your string action. What's the height at the 15th fret? If you prefer it on the lower side, you should be able to get it down to 1/16" on the treble side and a little above that on the bass side. If it's above that, you should be able to lower it without issue.

As has been mentioned, it's tough to tell how high action is from pictures, even close ups.
The angle on the one you've posted does make it seem rather high. And if that's the case,
then the tech has taken the path of least resistance to eliminate the buzz, but what needs
to be done, more than likely, is a fret level and dressing. So, yes, I'd take it back, but
at the same time, I'd want to confirm that the tech is capable of doing fretwork. If he isn't
then you need to figure out what you paid him to do, outside of a string change.

That's why I do most of my guitar work myself! And my friends' guitars too - I get a good bottle of wine for a setup, but if the guitar need a fret level, it get a fret level!

WOW!
Just what I love, a cheap date!:naughty: And then you're drunk when it's over. Lots "O" fun! :wow:

For $50 in cash or value, a friend would get a fret board clean & oil, truss rod adjust, nut adjust, fresh strings, a full lube job (with a tutorial), if there is a wiggle stick, along with action and intonation. I also include a little container of my special "lube spooge" for when they change strings, ergo the tutorial on when, how, where and why to use it.
