Hi everyone!

I'm a first time LP buyer, and I've got a big decision on my hands... I've had fantastic offers given to me on both a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Traditional and a 2010 Gibson USA Les Paul AFD. The AFD is £300 more than the Traditional, but which one would you guys honestly go for? Or is there another LP I should look at which I am missing?

Hopefully someone can help me, as I'm in desperate need of advice! Thanks guys, Ben.

go for an 08 standard or the plus. right in the middle in price and the AFD just says slash and has slash pups. also a more natural color. only real differences

Play some guitars, there is no consensus here on what is right for you.

Unless you're a huge Slash fan (Fair enough if you are) I'd go for the Traditional. They're great... But shop around... There are tons of nice Les Pauls in that price range.

We need to know your budget first to be able to tell you what you can look for, but I would personally play them both unless they're over the internet see what I like and what I don't like about either one.

Thanks for the advice so far guys, been great.

As for my budget, as it's my first proper guitar, I can probably spend about a maximum of £1600. Does this help?

And as for Slash, I think he's an incredible artist, but not the be-all-and-end-all, so I wouldn't be buying just for his name.

I'm really liking the heritage cherry sunburst colour however, so this might influenece my final decision...

Cheers again and please keep up the advice, you're all great :)

Think it over, read up and do a little homework.
But you might have your answer already. If so Congrats:applause:

I've done a fair bit of research now, and I'm leaning towards the Traditional now... But would a new Standard be any better?

Also, I'm not too sure about buying second-hand unless it's an incredible deal, as I want my first Les Paul experience to be one remembered well! :)

I did a lot of research before buying my first real LP a short time ago. I personally believe that the Traditional is closer to the original LPs than the current Standard.
I can only say if you can find a good one "WOW" ! I have two '04 Elitist's that I'd bought new back then and if I had to choose, I'd stay with the Trad and give up both!
Keep in mind that I tried many Trads before finding one that was right.
Also a word of warning, Gibson (& the Elitist) setups are not very good out of the factory. Be prepared to be able to assess the guitar build quality & workmanship as well as the neck profile, fret work & relief without an ideal action!
It really helps if you're capable of doing good setups because you can then evaluate better.

I'd probably go for the Trad. I just got one a few weeks ago and love it.

Thanks guys, i've decided, Traditional it is! The colour i want + the sound i want + the feel i want = perfect... :)

On a side note though, would it also be worth my time to invest in a 2010 Gibson Les Paul Junior Billie Joe Armstrong? I've heard good things about them and i do play a fair share of Green Day... But would you say they're worth the £700 i've been quoted?

Thanks in advance! :)

For that much quid you can buy used from USA and get your money's worth.
