What are your favorite cover versions? What are your criteria?

Me, I like originality, and taking the song farther. Note-for-note covers like Clapton's version of "Stone Free", while great in their own right, don't do much for me insofar as they don't take the song to new places.

For instance, this is cool stuff:

... but this really nails the song, for my money:

Plus, I can't get past how Moon just murders his drum-kit starting at about 1:40.

Anyway, here's a thread to put up your favorite covers, and post the original too, so we know what's going on.

I love Vanilla Fudges' Season of the Witch pure evil. Govt. Mules "Cortez" AND "Simple Man." Otis Reddings' "SATISFACTION" I love the horns.

I think that covers are an excellent view into the inner working of a band, to see how they arrange and interpret. Covers that ape the original, or like FFDP's "Bad Company" which merely re-contextualizes the song musically, are pointless to me. To me, a great cover has to take the original to another level. It's like saying two different phrases that mean the same thing, for example, "There's more than one way to skin a cat." vs. "Removing the epidermal layers from a feline may be accomplished using several different methods." Here's a couple of favorites:

Maybe too obvious, but a great cover nonetheless. Personally, I am very impressed that they could pull this out of the mess that was Bruce's original.

Haunting.

This is worth it if only for the killer rhythm section of Spider Sinnaeve and Matty Frenette.

Because almost everyone's familiar with the song, it's easy to play, and most guitar players seem to know it.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRhZISswW_k]YouTube - Black Sabbath - Children of the Grave[/ame]

Because I like this song better, it's just a little harder to play (Not much), and if a guitar player knows it, then we can probably work together.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JzS6V6AHcs]YouTube - Judas Priest - Metal Gods[/ame]

Another one that's easy to play or figure out, and a good indicator of whether or not my tastes similar to another players. Although i prefer the classic lineup over all, Ripper Owens was great, and I like the metal scream he adds. :)

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgpzLUCY0rU]YouTube - Slayer - Raining Blood[/ame]

If someone can play this one well, then we'll get along.

Seether - Careless Whisper.

Shaun's voice is pretty damn good in the chorus...

I like Ryan Adams' version of "Wonderwall" by Oasis.

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzZhtrsbJzs"]YouTube - Ryan Adams Wonderwall (Lyrics in Description).[/ame]

Noel Gallagher himself liked it as well. Enough to start playing the song closer to Adams' version, almost covering the cover, so to speak:

[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4H0lVwVzCa4"]YouTube - Noel Gallagher @ TCT 2010 - Wonderwall[/ame]

I've always thought Noel was a better singer than Liam though. Liam may be more distinctive, but he's also wildly inconsistent (believe me, I've seen Oasis when Liam's having an off night).

...An just for shits n' giggles, here's the Mike Flowers Pops cover of Wonderwall:

Thanks man. I've become kinda serious about cover tunes and find myself analyzing them with maybe more scrutiny than necessary. A bad cover ca drive me nuts, but a good one can absolutely make my day.
