I've heard that factory fitted PAFs are different to ones that are purchased individually. Can anyone add to this please?

I heard PAFs on a 1957 VOS in the shop and it sounded amazing, I was wondering if it would be worthwhile fitting PAFs purchased individually into my custom. The Custom comes with 498 / 490 stock pickups, which are the same as used in SG Standard / LP Studio I believe (budget pickups..?). Does everyone agree that these 498 / 490 pickups are the best ones for the custom???:hmm:

Not sure about the PAF clones, but I do know that the 500T and other ceramics have a 4 conductor wire aftermarket whereas factory installed pickups have the 2 conductor braided wire.

I only buy take offs, I don't need the 4 conductor wiring.

Custom pickups is a whole world of it's own. Most of the time they sound better, just not all of the time.

what's best for your guitar depends upon your style, amp and ultimately your own ears.

I have a few favorite pickup combinations, Gibson factory pickups are not among them usually. I only use their 500T in combination with a Dimarzio in the neck.

I wouldnt call 490/498 budget pick ups, their just a set that gibson put out on certain models, one being the custom, one being the studio.
They are quality pups, but its up to ur personal taste.
