It needs to be 5/8" thick before you carve. It could be thicker when you glue it to the mahogany just make sure to mill it to 5/8" when you carve.

DRJIMMI - get some plans. Check out Bartlett Woodworking for $22 including international shipping it will be the best investment of anything you buy to build a vintage correct LP replica!!

Cheers Peter.

May I second that, Toms plan and templates are top quality & exactly match the routing templates he can supply. Arrived in UK in less than 14 days, superb service & very helpful.
I am sure I am in a long queue of builders who have used these plans successfully, in wanting to say this! (Wont even go there with authenticity issue, these plans are widely used & highly rated).
Cheers, John.

Forgot to add that Ex-Nihlo's posts, including this thread have been invaluable & very helpful on my Bartlett plan build, along with carving tutorials he has painstakingly put together for all of us to share & lots of great builds. Thanks.

Cheers, John.

Set Neck, I don't know what the problem is that you have with Tom Bartlett or his templates but all I have seen from you is that you started out posting a set of templates that are ExNihilo's, then you follow up with pics of a set of plywood templates that I'm sure that Tom did not make. After reading your post I got my 53' out of the case and checked it against a set of Tom's templates and they matched as perfect as anyone could get. Now you youself said that 53 through 69 were the same. I have never met Tom but I have spent some time on the phone with him, he has always taken the time to answer any questions I've had and I know he is a very busy person. The point I'm trying to make is that you should have never made the statments you made about Tom on a public forum. You should have contacted Tom personally. All you have done is upset a lot of forum members that you may need some help from some day. Fred

Good eye - Tom's are MDF, aren't they? :hmm:

All I can say is that I have now been lucky enough to get up close and personal with a few real '59s here in Tokyo, and my notes on the anomalies are really consistent with Tom's stuff. I also used a combination of his plans as the basis for three guitars so far, none of which were replicas (all had different body modifications, headstocks, inlays, my own logos and a whole bunch of other stuff - none were even in a 'burst finish). I don't understand why someone who uses this stuff in the same way that I have would be considered a "fraud".

I should note that I also used the ExNihilo measurements for my first carve, but created my own after that, as the few original 'bursts I have seen here seem to be a bit differently contoured. I am not saying for a moment that they are inaccurate - one would expect variation, of course, with such inconsistent production techniques and such a small sample group. I'm still revising my carve shape and expect to be for a while.

Bottom line is this. You want an accurate burst???? Go spend 250K You'll get a MOFO!

If you want to build your self a guitar? Get the plans. Not perfect?? Who cares? Hell, in my day stuff like this didn't even exist.

Some of you are too damn anal, and I'd be willing to bet, a lot are folks that have never even seen a real one.

Carry on..............

Despite having seen the real thing, I'm definitely as guilty as anyone of being OCD, so a good reality check is always welcome. Cheers!!! :applause:

guys, he didn't say 5 bursts, he said 5 50's les pauls. i take that to mean from 52 to 59, and he only mentioned one burst.

You want exact, buy real. You want to make "restorations" based on a guy's plan? That sounds like you want to make copies. As a guy that has been at the repair bench for 35 years, I have NEVER needed a template to do a restoration. I HAVE needed templates to build new guitars.

I have several real 50's Les Pauls here, and none of them line up with another.

My opinion, worth what you paid for it.

"The guitar was being converted so my luthier ran a router around it to get a perfect shape and then started in on measurements"

I'm sorry but your "luthier" is a jerk, nobody responsible enough and in his right mind would risk a real 50's to that. JMHO.
