Hi all,

another weird question... that I can't easily find an answer too...

I've read that Gibson LP strings are grounded at the tailpiece and that epiphone LPs strings are grounded at the bridge... (Edit: wrong information check bellow)

Here's an x-ray of an Gibson showing it (couldn't find an EPI x-ray...)

this one is from another brand showing bridge grounding...

So question is : is that true & verified and is this the same on an epiphone tribute+ that share more of the wood design of a regular gibson LP...

I could (and will if needed) meter it but I'd need to ease the strings and isolate the bridge from strings for so... so if I can avoid the pain... (Maybe I can guess it from the hole position removing the electronics back cover... will try that first...)

Many thanks,

Take off the control plate and look for a hole in the side of the cavity that is not the wiring channel. Is there a small hole running perpendicular to the tailpiece? If yes, then it is grounded at the tailpiece. If not, the hole is probably in the wiring channel and grounded to the bridge. Just follow the little black or bare wire.

Or you could just pull all of the treble-side studs out and look down the holes.

Is there a difference in the amount of hum between the bridge grounding and tailpiece grounding?

Ok,
So I took some time to check tonight,

So it appears that the information "Epiphone LPs are grounded at the bridge" is simply wrong. At least for the 3 ones I checked. I think I saw this information on the Graph tech website...

I first visually checked, and the LP+ ground wire hole is arriving straight in the electronics cavity. But as I didn't want to spread bogus information, I double checked with a meter after isolating the strings. Tail piece is grounded, not the bridge.

By chance I had two other Epiphone LPs to check !

Korean 2001 : Strings grounded at tail piece.
Ultra III : Strings grounded at tail piece.

(For this two last I didn't check with the meter, but same holes same places just perp to the tail piece. So I'm rather confident on this information)

not that I didn't trust you :) but the "AFAIK" made me want to double check specially when I had this wrong information in the Ghost piezo bridge instruction manual...

Well mine is definitely grounded at the bridge.

Sure, it's a wraparound bridge but...

When I changed the Bridge on my Korean Epi, There were no wires attached to the studs. Must be grounded at the tailpiece.

When I fitted my Bigsby to my Chinese Custom, There were no wires attached to the studs. Must be grounded at the bridge.

Unless of course the wires are not attached mechanically to the studs at all IE with solder, maybe the ground wires are just making contact by touch as the stud gets pushed into the hole.

This is an interesting question.

Then that's why when I pulled the studs there were no wires. Which makes my previous post nul and void as I still do not know where these guitars are grounded :laugh2:
