Hey there everyone,

So, I've been playing for about a year and a half now and I think it's time for me to get my first Electric Guitar, now, I don't have enough money or skills for a proper Gibson, but I've been looking into Epiphone's for quite a while now, and I've made my choice. The Les Paul Junior, don't ask my why but it just feels right, A friend of mine had this guitar and I got to try it out, he had the stock Humbucker, I felt it was kind of muddy and I wanted to change it, I ordered this same guitar over Amazon and It should be here some time next week. I want to change the pickup for a P90 (Yes I know about the sizing problems, about the P-94T, and about the Dog Ear). I wanna get the Dog Ear because it looks better than the other "Phat Cat's" or the Humbucker-Sized P-90's, I really want that Punk-Rocky tone, (Blink-182, Green Day, etc.) and I've heard the Epi Casino, and it's just AMAZING, it's hands-down the best guitar I've ever heard, and I've been looking at the pickups of that same guitar on ebay and I've gotten into a pickle here, there are only Neck and Bridge Epiphone P-90's, which one should I get if I were to wire one down onto a LP Jr.?

Bridge pickup would be the one you want BUT, a P-90 won't fit in a humbucker route. You could get the guitar modified but I'm not sure it would be worth it. Personally, I think Phat Cats sound great, though they don't have the traditional p-90 look.

Have you looked at the SD P-Rails? That'd give you P-90 (ish) plus humbucker and/or single coil tones, depending on how you wire it in. Eg: Push/Pull pot for humbucker/P-90 or 3-way mini-toggle ... better yet, install it with an SD Triple Shot pickup ring for maximum flexibility.

Not sure on the price difference but if you can stretch to it, the Gibson Faded Jr is a great guitar and comes with a Gibson dog-ear P-90 ready to go.

Freddie,

First off, welcome to MLP. This is a great forum with tons of info and very friendly and knowledgeable members. Epi LP Jrs are really great guitars. My best friend has a 2005 in vintage sunburst with a humbucker. Its not only a looker, but plays fantastic and has an awesome neck. We picked his up off of GC's Used Gear section for $49. It was a steal for sure.

My old 97' Epi SG Jr has a P-90 (a boutique Rio Grande Blues Dawg) and man it definitely has a ballsy tone. As for going with a bridge or neck Casino pup, I'd suggest the bridge as it will be wound slightly hotter than the neck pup and produce a crisper tone. If you want a more mellow tone, just set the tone knob to about 5 or 6 and you're there.

Hope this has helped a little and please post pics when you get yours.

Welcome to MLP. You might consider talking with one of the professional winders in the vendor section here. They can custom build exactly what you need. It's an option open to you but strictly your choice. :)

Freddie,

Concur with SJM. You may want to look into one of the custom winders. As I'm sure you're well aware, a dog ear P-90 will not fully cover the hole left by you humbucker. Even the Casino pup is not wide enough so more than likely you'll have a portion of the humbucker route and original pickup ring screw holes showing. Many vendors offer a HB sized P-90 pup. I'm sure some of the boutique winders offer this as well. Keep us posted on what you decide.

Best of luck

Damn, I could've sworn I saw a Epi LP Jr. With a P-90 here on the forums, but you may be right, I thought that it would cover the holes that the humbucker would leave, but it wont cover the top nor the bottom portions of it. I kind of spent all my savings and have only about $70 USD left, it would be awesome if you guys could help me out here.

Sorry for the double-post,

But Seymour Duncan has these SP90, humbucker sized pickups, does anyone own these? If so, How are they?

Hey man, thats what we're here for... to help each other. If you haven't already done so, go to the Duncan website. They have an extensive audio library with demos of the pups they make. Then, if you like it, go on ebay and snag one (if you can find it cheaper).

I highly recommend the LP junior with a Single p90... I just bought this little gem yesterday. I have several Gibsons and this little bugger keeps right up with them plus it's easy on the wallet . Nice thick neck and solid... it screams

What model is thiis you talk about? I want a jr with just one pup. A P-90 would be great but a hombucker would work too. Maybe one of those P-rails SD offers.....

Epi Junior

These have been available for a few years now. I have one the earlier models, a 2007 '57 Reissue in yellow, but mine has a P-100

I have one of the new Epi Jr's and consider it to be probably the best bang for the buck I have ever seen. It's a very cool piece.
