Go used. I regret not getting my LP used.

definitely. i got a 95 epi custom for three hundred bones. thats about 500 bucks less than new and its already broken in and beautiful!! thinking about replacing the hardware though because its pretty dulled down to almost chrome. but ya plays beautifully and is nicely broken in. almost starting to get a vintage look.
if you find a good deal on used go for it.

If it matters to you to get a new one, get a new one, but once you do, you will probably realize that it isn't very different from a used one and yet you paid double. Just my experience with it. Good luck!

My only issues with buying used Epis are these:

  1. Unlike Gibsons, wear and tear on a used Epi doesn't necessarily translate into increased "mojo", but rather potential repair bills.
  2. There seem to be ten times more fake Epis out there than real ones, and getting suckered is a lot easier than when shopping for Gibsons. The best way to avoid this is to buy new from a reputable dealer.
The cost savings between new and used Epis is so small as to not be worth the potential hassles to me. Through some wheeling and dealing, I was able to pick up a new Epi Custom in alpine white over the weekend from GC for $429. When these kinds of deals are available, there is just no reason to take chances with used.

I love mine. I did shave the back of the neck though. I got it on ebay, it came with a Jeff Beck pickup in the bridge position and a 59 in the neck. I changed all the hardware to black

Where'd you pickup all the black hardware?

I've got one in Ebony and a Gibson 08 LP Standard. I play both about equally. I too changed out the pick-ups for Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz (Hotrodded set). I really like the Epi Custom.

How did you swing $429? Will you buy my next guitar for me?

It worked out like this: normal GC tag price on this model is $699, but the one in the store was tagged at $659. During the month of March, GC is doing a promotion where if you bring in something for trade, you get an additional 15% off the price. Now, 15% off $659 would have brought it down to about $560, but I am a repeat customer at my local GC and so rather than give me 15%, they just sold it to me "at cost", which brought it down to $529. My trade-in item knocked another $100 off the price. Hence, the final $429.

Whenever I deal with GC I always look for ways to lower my costs with them. I take advantage of their price matching policy whenever I can. I take advantage of their "15% + trade-in" deals whenever I can. I take advantage of their desire to keep me as a happy repeat customer when I haggle (I don't mean the kind of customer who just buys strings and straps from them). So far these strategies have worked out pretty well for me.

Okay, that makes more sense. It wasn't like you walked in and talked your way into paying $429 from $699. I mean, you still got a great deal, but you know what I mean.

No, you're right, it wasn't just listed at $429.

However, it doesn't take that much effort to score deals like this from GC. I didn't have to try any underhanded schemes either. Exploiting their own discount offers, when available, and being a customer they like to deal with goes a long way there, or so I've found.

Yeah man, I can't believe I bought mine new, not to mention at the dreaded GC. (What was I thinking?)

429.99 + tax means I paid almost 500 dollars for an epi lp standard. :slap::mad2:

But hey, at least I love my guitar!
