Could be
I don't think I've ever seen a honeyburst with a red back, much less a 59.
All of these Epiphone 59s have had red backs. Plus the guitar has the straight cut pickguard and knob pointers which are specific to the '59.

I also just realized the Epiphone '59 finish options are pretty much the same as the 4 options for the Gibson Les Paul Tribute, which also has a Honey Burst that is more of a Orange/Yellow. I do think Epiphone went overkill on the orange tho compared to the Gibson Honey Burst

the ones guitar center have in stock are all floor models. order at your own risk.
Floor models, and returns that their "tech" can't find a problem with.
Order from GC and you could end up getting Sp8ctre's return.

Looks like Sweetwater replaced the basic stock photos with some regular front shots as well. These ones aren't quite as bad but still pretty orange.

I didn't return mine and I'm not going to. I got a $100 refund for the bad pot and I already fixed it myself.

I really dig the top on mine, not a fan of too much chevron flame...plus it plays and sounds fantastic!

Soundwise

how far away from a "proper" Gibson would you say?

Just got mine shipped, here's some side by sides of the comparison on the website, PS mines the darker one of the two
Just like the real ones the burst are inconsistent. Looks like you got a good one!

man... I may have changed my mind on returning. this epi model is fantastic sounding. I let it sit around since I took delivery thinking about it. just plugged it in tonight. with such a nice top on this one, it may stay.

That’s the thing. These sound SO good it’s nearly impossible to consider an upgrade. I have the money to do whatever I’d like, but I don’t see the logic in spending nearly 2k more for something that won’t sound like these do!

I've actually been thinking about keeping my plainer top one (though I'm still torn about the tuners, would love to get people's input on if they're bad enough to warrant trying to get anotther). Definitely keeping the Southern Fade on order. For $799 these are great guitars if you can live with small issues (slightly misaligned tuners, plainer top, having to do basic electronic fixes, replacing rings). If you blindfolded me and handed it to me I'd have to see it to believe it's not a Gibson of some variation. Best Epiphone neck I've ever played.

I agree, I'll put locking tuners on mine because I always do. Might consider a new nut, but right now there is nothing I would do to make it sound or play better because I can't see how anything would improve it.

Just registered. Received my 59 last Thursday, I'm in Ontario Canada I ordered it from a local music Store in Pembroke.
came in on the 22nd. The arts music store in Newmarket looks like they have one of each colour in stock according to their web site
I feel like this is the nicest top I've seen. Congratulations on the beauty, she's stunning!

Comparison of 59 rings and standard 60's rings. The 60s rings are significantly shorter, especially on the bridge.
Epiphone CAN definitely get it right if they want to.
59 was made in june... 60s in may.

Sweetwater is showing a few new exclusive colors coming up in some other 2020 models. There’s a 50s lemon burst that just looks much like a shiny version of the honeyburst 59. I think they have the pictures and descriptions mixed up on another one, but it looks like a smokehouse burst 60s model is coming up also. Another shade of blue in the modern, which I don’t get it, the Pelham modern is great.
