Epiphone 2009 vs 2020 Les Paul 1959 Standard

The OP is in Canada and I think the list price up here is $1150 which makes the final taxes in price around $1300.

You're correct, however the used 2020 LP was at Long and McQuade for $900, so with tax just a little over $1K.

Thanks for your responses. I went to check out the 2009 LP and ended up getting a good deal on it after some give and take so I grabbed it. It's in good shape for a 12 year old guitar. Plays good, really loud acoustically and resonant, and I like the neck shape too. I plugged it in and the Burstbuckers sound great really crunchy!

My Southern Fade doesn’t feel remotely dipped in plastic. And the finish doesn’t look or feel thick in the least. Have you actually held or played one of these 2020 ‘59s?

I have not, and was assuming it was like the Custom '55, which is matte, and totally dipped in plastic. They're also sweet, and I love them.

Looks sweet!! Those are my favorite Gibson pickups, and I LOVE those cases!

Yeah, this finish is different. Although, I will say that if Epiphone were to do another run of 55’s but with the 2020 build quality, I’d quickly be owning another Epiphone!!!!

I just got a ‘60s Standard in Bourbon Burst and I am beyond impressed. This is way better than any foreign-made guitar I’ve played, and they have been flying off the shelf for at least the past few months. The fit, finish, action, neck—just everything is perfect. I highly recommend the ‘60s Standard from 2020. You will not regret it. It’s a perfect player right out of the box with the ProBuckers. Pretty sure they are a definite upgrade in all aspects in regards to previous years of manufacture. They really outdid themselves this time; I can’t put her down!

2019 and 2020....from the literature and serious research....are said to be the high water mark for LES PAULS in the modern era.....That and the fact that my investments actually made money during COVID drove me to action and i bought my second Gibson in July 2020.....having purchased a brand new Les Paul Custom....the fret less wonder in 1971. The brand new gloss Gibson Custom Shop Wildwood Spec R8 with 60s V2 neck is stunningly superior to the 1971 Gibson. The Custom Buckers are spectacular. The R8 is 8.4 lbs, resonates incredibly acoustically and sustains spectacularly when amplified through a Boogie Mark IV, Vibrolux and a Clark Piedmont. I have played along side a very good player with a much earlier year class Les Paul....no contest.....not even close. The cosmetic appeal of a guitar while important is not how i evaluate a guitar...Is it a hot player..and how does it sound.....does it have the long neck tenon.....Custom Buckers.....sheathed truss rod....old school wiring harness.....500k pots....etc etc...I say invest the $400 and go for the 2020. It's brand new and represents the fulfillment of the Gibson Legacy. BUY ONCE CRY ONCE...

Nice looking guitar. I think the Epiphone 2009 and 2010 models with US pickups and some upgraded components represent good value. I did find a 1960 v3 used in good shape and it represented a large savings compared to the newer models. The new headstock looks nice, but the older design is not a deal breaker in my opinion. I have not measured the neck, but it feels more like a 59 to me than a slim taper. The guitar handles low action well.

I thought I would send a photo of my epiphone les paul standard 1960 v3. I am not certain on the specs of the 6oth anniversary models regarding fretboard material. the 2010 model featured a rosewood fretboard. The alternative woods used for fretboards seem to work well and for the most part are well received. That being said, some like the familiar feel of rosewood on a Les Paul type guitar.

I agree, but the truss rod cover is a bit much with the bright white script imo.

I like the 59 as well, it came as a cherry sunburst and an amber/brown finish I think?. I don't know if Epiphones made in China will ever be collectable, but I think the series of 59 and 60 tributes are a good investment used. I don't think you can loose if you get one for a fair price. When you look at the specs, they have added premium components to most of the areas where you would upgrade a standard Epiphone model. I am enjoying playing my 60 v3, it has the feel of a quality instrument and sounds good. There is nice looking 59 cherry sunburst currently advertised on Kijiji Ontario for $760.00 Canadian.
