OK guys & gals, does anyone have a Epi Les Paul Ultra they can give me a review on. I'm seriously considering obtaining one in the near future. Don't get me wrong, I love my Standard, but she is heavy.

I own one. I had a Dot 335 that electronic problems and I return it for the Ultra. First it is a lot lighter. I had a Standard just like you and I needed a back brace to play it. Anyway the body is chambered. Giving it a warmer tone. Almost a semi hollow body sound. The neck pickup sounds great clean but when I push it into overdrive it mud up. The bridge pickup sounds great clean and dirty. I'm planning on changing the bridge pickup to a Gibson Classic 57. All in all its a good guitar and I feel that when you try it out compare it with your standard. You will hear the different. Good Luck~!!!

Sounds great! I'll try it out at my local GC. Although I am a little worried about ordering online.

Played one tonight at GC, the neck has an indescribable look and feel to it, sounded great through a DSL100/1960a. It was very light also, and the looks don't hurt.

I just did a 50's style mod to my Ultra to give independent volume control for the pickups, After making the mod the cheap volume pots on the neck pickup screwed up. I had to replace it to fix it. Having some extra pots from All Parts, so I replace the pot. The tone was a lot better than before, the stock pickups came alive. But after closer inspection of the package the pot came in I installed not a 500k pot but a 250k Pot instead. The neck pickup sounded better with the 250K than with the 500K pot. This might be a new cheap mod for anyone not wanting to change pickups but looking for another way to improve sound

I have one, as you can see in the photo, after putting
on Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates and JB it sounds as great
as it looks.
It does have a different feel and sound to it, alot lighter
dont like the satin finish on neck, but do like how thin it is for leads.

The thing about the sound is it sounds more like an ES-335 because
its hollow. Its better for Lead than rythm. (not a cruchy guitar)
I do love the guitar BUT IT IS DIFFERENT.

The best part is its looks.

It has been my favorite guitar, but today i pick up my
new Antiuqe White Gibson Les Paul Studio

hey brro, what's wrong with using an epiphone?i used to own an ace frehley les paul custom with that name on the headstock, and till this day,i still regret sellin it...:( needed the money at the time. worse still, mine was finished in trrans black, limited,n from what i know, they whole model ceased production...

a guitar is a guitar, nobody has any right to stop us from playing/owning our babies, likewise,i don't think we have the right to make others feel in any way inferior by using their instruments.i know we don't mean it most times, but our words/actions can convey the wrong messanges.quite often, simply saying things like that can make a person feel negative.it's almost like racism... ,as a matter of fact,is'nt one of the most significant 'differences' between a gibby les and a n epi les, quite literally...the ''skin?''

anyway,a great guitar to me might sound like crap to u.like what my mum used to say to me when i was much younger,"one man's meat is another man's poison."

there is absolutlely no such thing as a 'universally accepted best guitar'

I do love Epiphone. Since I posted this thread I picked up a Epi Les Paul Custom from a guy off ebay and she is a beauty. The only reason I posted this thread was to learn a liitle more about the Ultra model from Epiphone. I did not intend to convey anything negative about Epiphone.

Beautiful! I haven't had the chance to check one out yet as my "local" GC is about an hour away.

I just installed a set of EMG 81 and 85 into my Ultra and man does it sound a lot better than the stock pickups. I'm really happy now. A great sounding Les Paul without it breaking my back LOL

The Custom I just picked up has a set DiMarzio pickups, I'm not sure which ones, but I can tell that they are brighter than my Standards'. They do sound great.:thumb:

My daughter has an Ultra. I have a Duncan JB bridge and a Jazz neck pickup that I'm not using. How do you think they will sound vs. the stock humbuckers on the Ultra?
Thanks,
FP

Oh, alot better, the Ultra Pickups are very good
also, kind of like stock Gibsons,
but the Duncans have alot better punch than
the original pickups, since is a semi-hollowbody
it just tightens the sound up better.
