AFAIK, they're basically the same, other than aesthetics...unless they've changed things up since I bought my Std in early '08. Someone'll come along with a more definitive post than mine, am sure :)

Another option would be the LP Prophecy GX. Gibson pups, quilted top and 24 frets.

The new model.

The old model.

the custom has a diamond on the headstock, square neck inlays (an extra inlay at fret #1), and body binding on the rear of the guitar.

Those are the biggest differences. Cosmetic.

(though some will have different tops or fretboards at times.)

Glad to see so many props for the Tribute Plus. I absolutely love it. Last guitar I'll ever need. Hopefully, not the last I've bought.

Prophecy GX seems to be out of stock for a long time. So you'll join the others who ordered them long time ago.

The Tribute Plus will be soon back in stock. As said above, if you're gonna throw some money into a guitar you're willing to play along with for years, I'd get the Tribute Plus, a lot of great features and it comes with a case. A lot of a guitar for the money IMO.

I hope you find them in stores, otherwise, you can wait for it (like me :D)

I'm suprised that nobody has mentioned the coil taps and pro-buckers!

The current epiphone les paul les custom models are now called custom pros, and feature coil taps (coil split I think technically).

For mine it's the visuals that make me prefer a custom any day. I just love the front and back binding and the diamond on the headstock. If you don't particularly like its sound then you can always swap the PU's. I always say that it's easier to change a guitar's sound than its appearance.

Not sure if I'm correct, but it does say preorder, so not in stock yet. :s

Oops, you are correct sir. The blue one comes in Monday, the rest on the 24th. Or the 21st for GC.

I think you will be very happy with that choice. The other upgrades on the Tribute Plus include locking tuners, a Switchcraft toggle and Mallory 150 caps. Just to be clear though, the Tribute Plus has series/parallel switching and not coil splitting. The resulting change in tone is very similar but with series/parallel switching you are still running on both coils of the P/U where as with coil splitting, you are shutting one of the coils off and playing on a single coil. These two features often get confused with one another.

2010 Tribute = Plain top, asymmetrical neck
1960 Tribute = Plain top, '60s SlimTaper neck profile
1960 Tribute Plus = Plus maple top finishes, '60s SlimTaper neck

Apart from cosmetic or neck profile differences, everything else is the same.
Gibson '57 pups, coil splitting, hard case, etc.
