I'm looking to get out of my PRS SE Custom 24 for a Les Paul. The PRS is great and all, but I'm gassing for an LP. I put an ad on Craigslist to swap and I got some hits, both Epi's. One is a MIK Classic Quilt top and the other is a MIC Standard.

I know there's a gazillion "what's the difference" threads, and I read the FAQ, but its a nightmare just looking at pics to figure out with all the sub-models.

From what I gather on an Unofficial wiki page...

Standard
Alnico Classic humbuckers
Mahogany body with carved maple top
Single-ply body & neck binding
Set mahogany neck with SlimTaper profile
Rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays
12" fingerboard radius
22 mediun-jumbo frets
Tune-O-Matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece
1-ply elevated cream pickguard
Chrome or nickel hardware
14:1 ratio Grover die-cast tuners
Amber bell knobs
2 Vol. 2 Tone controls
3-way selector switch
24.75" scale
1.68" nut width

Classic Quilt Top
Open coil Alnico Classic & Alnico Hot Humbucker pickups
Mahogany/alder body with flame maple veneer

Chrome or black hardware
Set mahogany neck profile?
Rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays
sinle-ply Body & neck binding
Tune-o-matic bridge with stopbar tailpiece
Amber bell knobs
2 Vol. 2 Tone controls
3-way selector switch
24.75" scale
1.68" nut width

So I get that it's in the pups, and the mahogany vs. mahogany/alder body? Is there a Big difference in that though by the time it's amped and such, etc?

Can I assume this makes the Standard is the "better" model being the all mahogany body?

I also don't know about the neck profile. Are they the same?

The Standard and Classic are basically the same guitar. The only differences are the pups are uncovered in the Classic, the finish may be different - some Classics are Quilt Top veneer - and the Classic may have black hardware instead of chrome. As for the wood used, that can vary depending on the year and the factory the guitar was made in. The quality should be very similar between the two guitars.

As usual, the best thing is to try out both guitars and pick the one you like. It's very possible that neither of them will flip your switch and in that case you should continue your search. Don't settle until you find one that feels right to you.

These are them...

I love the look of the quilt top, but the sunburst is so classicc looking and reminiscent of my favorite players, like Warren Haynes, Slash, Ace Frehley, Page, etc. Obviously I have to play them.

If they are of equal quality, then I'll go with the quilt, although the burst comes with a hard case. Hmmm....

So I spoke to the guy with the quilt-topped Classic. If nobody shows up before Saturday with cash in hand, then it's mine.

Cool looking guitar. If it were mine, all the plastic would be replaced with black plastic, with black speed knobs and I would install a TP bridge, and Faber aluminum tailpiece and spacers, then off for a Plek and pro setup....
