What about joining another forum that's totally about politics? This really is about guitars/music and general chit chat about that. Bringing politics into the mix has never turned out well and I've been here long enough to have seen it first hand.

Oh and the idea that a nasty discussion would stay in the sub forum is not going to happen.

L..

Oh I thought it was about guitars/music and rabbits!

for 4 years been a member of another forum, stayed away from the politics there until the election started a few months back....its a great forum, i enjoyed it as much as i do here....

but i made the mistake of entering one of the political threads and it got super ugly, probably still is, now its easy to spot when things will blow up there......so i just stay away, lurk a bit but stay away from posting...it affects buying and selling, affects your other posts and opinion .....not good at all

so as restrictive as it may seem, the temptation to voice a political opinion does set off a shiitstorm that does no good, accomplishes nothing but ill will....works for me,lesson learned

it DOES spill into the rest of the forum...

thanks for your work dave

You know, people around here in general are pretty easy going and forgiving. Aside from1 other forum, this is pretty much the extent of my social media experience, and I rarely go to the other forum. I like it here. The peeps, the mods, the topics, the hijinx, the information to be learned, and just the plain old understanding of like-minded people (we all dig guitars, after all, correct?).

Correct, chase. And I don't care what goes on in private messaging. The minute it becomes trouble in open forum, it's a problem we have to deal with.

And I will say that I've fielded several PM conversations between members who ran into trouble, name-calling, nasty stuff, etc. They report to me, I need to deal with it. I invariably order them to neutral corners.

You guys have no damn idea what goes on behind the scenes here. No clue at all. :laugh2:

I have young kids. I know what goes on. ;)

Little Johnny took a dump in the sandpit again, he's gone and ruined it for everyone.

+1 to politics staying off the board in all aspects.

I know the reason for people wanting a political sub-forum. It would theoretically act as containment and keep the Backstage free of political talk. But that just wouldn't be how it plays out, unless their was a system of forced anonymity (which would just be silly).

Another board I post on has a politics thread. I don't know about the other members there, but when I recently ventured into that thread for the first time it radically altered how I looked at the board's community, so I closed the book on that board entirely. Maybe I'm just weak-minded, but I can say that if there was a political subforum it would probably ruin The Backstage for me personally.

Yeah this place being politics free makes it an oasis of sorts, but it goes beyond that. A big rule of polite conversation is no political or religious talk. That's just simple etiquette and it rightfully applies here.

Absolutely right.

Nothing weak-minded about it. People lose it when separated from a face-to-face discussion via a keyboard. People say things they wouldn't dare say if the other was standing right in front of them.

It makes for ruined friendships and connections, bad vibes and ugly commentary. There simply is no upside to it.

This has nothing to do with my own political leanings. This has everything to do with keeping the peace and maintaining a friendly atmosphere on this forum.

If one wants to grouse and bitch, if one wants to gloat and celebrate, there are million places they can do so all over the internet.

This is a guitar forum with a catch-all, off-topic sub-forum known as the backstage. It is no place for politics.
