I don't think JF was ever actually prohibited from playing his songs. Once a work is published anyone can perform it "without substantial alteration" pursuant to a compulsory license.
I think JF refused to promote this old songs or write any new stuff for a long time because he was totally ripped on the rights by Fantasy records.
Saul Zaentz was sneakier than that. He sued Fogerty for the solo record 'The Old Man Down the Road', claiming it plagiarized the Creedence song 'Run Through the Jungle' without paying royalties.
Fogerty won, the jury effectively ruling that "All John Fogerty songs sound pretty much the same."
