Last night I bought the new Van Halen disc expecting it to be terrible, but many here said it was good, but after hearing Tattoo, I figured they were now, a Vegas lounge act, at best-
I went for a drive today and decided this is how I would listen to the disc for the first time--The way rock and roll was intended to be heard--Driving down the road, with the speakers blaring--
Anyway, I skipped right past the first track--I refuse to hear Tattoo ever again, on purpose anyway-
She's the woman and you and your blues were cool---there is some typical old Van Halen weird sort of odd crap---But all in all, this thing rocks---
First thing I noticed was the mix sounded a little flat and lifeless--I then noticed one of my kids had tweaked the EQ on my stereo and it was not set how I normally run it--I bumped the pre sets to "Loud:MID" and the mix jumped up in my face--
The drums were booming--The bass could be heard, as I am sure Ed allows his new bass player to actually be in the mix--
Eddie's playing has a fire that has been lost since before 1984---His tone is great, he has some new licks, he uses the wah very tastefully and cool-ly
But I am going to make a Proclamation -- The song "Outta Space" is as good a song as the original lineup has ever recorded--I am not bullshitting---
So what if I thought MA's vocals were missing, which they were--it's good-
Popping the mids helped the backing vocals a lot---
This disc is good---
