Does a scarf joint on the neck equal a fake?

Good god, that top color isn't even close. Looks like metallic banana.

I think it depends on the monitor. On my monitor the color looks very close to the real deal.

I'm amazed how people can still think they have a real Gibson, once they hold these fakes in their hands.
Am I correct to assume that you never really played a Gibson, let alone even touched one?

Anyway, I hope things sort out for you.

It scares the HELL out of me, that the OP (who has supposedly owned other Gibsons) could think for a SECOND that this was a real LP. I've only skimmed the thread, so I assume I'm missing something?

I'm no expert, but I've owned and been around Gibsons like the OP, so a 2 second glance at the photos told me exactly what this guitar wasn't. Epi's are one thing, but anyone who gets stiffed buying a fake Gibson is either very greedy for the deal of the century or just doesn't know squat about Gibson Les Pauls or what they're supposed to look like!

Clearly a fake, no doubt about it.

Scarf joint is a dead give away.
Truss rod cover is the wrong shape, has the wrong screws and wrong bevel to it.
Under it it has the old holes of the three screw cover.
IT HAS A METRIC BRIDGE with the screw up/down adjustments.
Wrong back plates.
Wrong strap buttons.
Just look at those electronics!

Who knows what it's made of. Those are $300 guitars...

Clearly a fake, no doubt about it.

Also, from the photo you posted of the body, the volume and tone controls appear way out of alignment...

Uhm, what does ebay/paypal have to do with this?

Post #23 he says he used paypal, "I just called him and he was super apologetic and I don't think he was trying to rip me off. He promised to ship my bass back in the morning and refund my paypal payment, so hopefully it will all work out."
:hmm::shock:

Dude, if that scares the HELL out of you, you must live a very sheltered life. As I previously stated, I was posting here thinking it was a fake within five minutes of opening the box. I was only provided with the first set of pictures when I bought it. As soon as I had a minute to really look it over, I noticed all the problems.

I received a refund through my paypal account today and got a tracking number for my bass, so the the seller was as good as his word. I'm back in the market for a Les Paul and I'll keep looking for a good one.

Thanks again everyone,

Michael

Good to hear the money's been returned and your bass is coming back--hopefully you can find a real Les Paul--or a Les Paul type guitar of good quality--not a fake--they're nice guitars.

It may just be the angle--but the headstock shape looks wrong as well as the other things that have been mentioned in this thread.

I think the concern here albeit a bit exaggerated for the sake of effect is that the first set of pictures you said were provided by the seller was enough to tip a lot of posters here that the guitar was clearly a fake.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th pictures that you were sent were more than enough to convince me personally that it was a Chinese copy and I'm certain that many would tell you that the first one sent to you did it for them.

The majority of members here haven't ever handled a fake LP much less bought one and I think it's a bit of a shock when someone who actually got scammed shows up and has the courage to "out" themselves so to speak.

Glad you got your dough and guitar back. I hope the poor sap who sold it to you can get his Rick back. :fingersx:

That's kind of my point as well, I wasn't a member here until I already had a fake Les Paul in my hands. I think someone that is a member of a forum not based on guitars in general, but Les Pauls, has a different knowledge base than someone that plays guitar as their third instrument. I'm far from an expert on Les Pauls. I owned a Studio for a while, which I traded for guitar lessons, but I haven't even played any of the higher end Gibson guitars. Details such as the colour is off, the bevel on the truss-rod cover is wrong, the back colour is off for the top colour are only things that would stand out to someone that has at least seen many Les Pauls. I have not, therefore I was duped.

I'm definitely not saying I didn't make a stupid mistake, that's obvious. I guess many people wouldn't out themselves for making a mistake, but how does anyone learn from that. I definitely should have done research before I traded the guy. I trusted that he was an honest seller, and I think I was still correct on that assumption. He was just ripped off himself and didn't know what he had.

Yeah, but it was a transaction between forum members, wasn't it?
I'm not sure, if paypal's buyer protection is worth much for deals made outside of ebay. :hmm:

The biggest problem, is these are all over, people are buying them. Maybe just because they want a cheap guitar that looks like their heroes... but sooner or later it goes up for sale... and they decide whether they'll take $200 or try to sell it off to some unsuspecting buyer for $2,000...

And they're getting better "looking" every day...

For posterity, remember this logo style/shape, because just like pretty much every other counterfeit guitar, it's been the same since the beginning:

Note the thickness of the lines, and how the "b" is connected to the "s", and the "s" to the "o". One of the many smaller details, that are often overlooked.

Fake. The scary thing is the headstock and lettering prositioning are getting better. It would have been more difficult to tell if it was ebony. The quick visual without taking it apart would then only be the lack of fret nibs.
