Stage clothes, or just whatever you happen to be wearing that day? I like stage clothes, it adds to the visuals, and we do go to hear, and see, bands live.

Kiss have taken it to the extreme, but some bands just look so ordinary in jeans and the obligatory Metallica or Jack Daniels t-shirts. I think it takes a certain arrogance to be a musician, we do like to show off, even just a little. Having the confidence to wear something outlandish says something about the player. As an audience member, I want to see that confidence, and that 'I look cool and I believe in myself' attitude. I cant stand seeing bands, in particular young bands, when they just look like bums. And why would you promote another band when you're up there?

Certain genres have their standard uniforms, a metal band always looks like a metal band, black jeans etc, jazz bands probably wear suits, and so on. You need to project some kind of image, as image seems to be the number one, and music is almost secondary now (saddly). Just make a bit of effort. You don't want to look ridiculous, but you are an entertainer, so entertain, both musically and visually.

Stages clothes are for people who like to play dress up.

Theatrics aren't bad though and can be entertaining.

yup, put I include that the clothes I wear are for the band Im playing in that night... The country band I do wear blue jeans and western shirts and even a Austrailian cowboy hat. The rock band I wear black jeans, graphic shirts (unbuttoned with wife beaters underneath), and for jazz I wear slacks and a button down or pull over...

Shirts. Scully shirts. Melody Ranch and Rock and Roll (discontinued so I'm glad I have two) right now. Eventually I'll have more but I'll have to see how much weight I can lose (I'm plateaued badly right now) before I buy more.

Yep. My street clothes are boring and, to me, inappropriate for a gig. Not because they're offensive in any way, but because a band is there to entertain the eyes just as much as the ears. Some people don't care if a band is up there in a trucker hat, Hawaiian shirt, cargo shorts and socks with sandals, but that just ain't for me, and it's not entertaining from a visual standpoint.

Again, just my opinion, but I don't think street clothes are acceptable for a gig. I'm not saying you have to go out there in 7 inch glitter boots and makeup, but do something.

General rule of thumb: If you have to worry about how you look on stage, your music probably sucks.

I SAY THIS FROM YEARS OF EXPERIENCE ON AND OFF STAGES. :thumb:

Knock yourself out. Feel free to look like a jackass.

Never said to make yourself to look like a jackass, but would you go out there with spagetti stains on your shirt? Hope not. And I don't mean going out there dressed like a clown, just don't go up there looking like shit. (Not you, just people in general.)

Worry? I bet a lot of people don't worry, but they do want to look presentable. There's a reason that people clean themselves up for a job interview, and I believe the same mindset should be carried over to the stage. I don't obsess over it, the music is absolutely king, but it doesn't have to be one or the other.

I like stage clothes. At least a vest or leather pants, or something a little different.
When I'm on stage I'm wearing a tux. Playing bass*. With an orchestra.

Artists don't treat music like a job.

I dont know how many years you have of experiance, but Im pushing 35+ years in the entertainment industry, both in performing and distribution. Sorry but I completely disagree with you. EVERY band I play in are top flight units with nothing but professional players with as many years as I have in or more. Every band is tight, get GREAT audience responses, DONT SUCK, and we often have more gigs than we can do simply because we are professionals. We dress the part for these bands (see my earlier post) because people expect us to look a certain way, play a certain way and we fill that expectation. And BTW, our albums sales reflect that as well, we make damn good money now lemme tell ya.
