I've been going from a player to a collector for years. No idea why I bounce back and forth like I do. The brain is a complicated thing.....

It's like peak's and valley's with me, with both guitar and drums. Taking a break from doing something you love isn't a bad thing.

Do I ever get fed up playing guitar. No. Never.
I agree with the above poster that I get frustrated..alot.
But right now in my personal situation (wife split, car just got totalled) the only time I don't think about that stuff is when I'm plugged in. I even just like having my LP around me when I'm eating, or watching tv. It sounds silly and I probably sound like a loser lol, but since I'm by myself now my LP's have helped me alot to take my mind off of the shit going on. And when I look at my guitar I feel challenged. I'm glad it's difficult, makes you feel better when you accomplish something. I don't know if that was what the OP meant, but I just had to let that out.

Fed up? No
Stale ? Yes
Today for example, was going thru vhs' of old band stuff tryin to gather copies of originals i've written and other transferable stuff, i heard a song by Tonic called Soldiers Daughter that we covered, and it reminded me how impressed i was w/ that album/cd. Lemon Parade, it had alot of good songs on it IMO.
Going back to a certain album or CD allows my mind to rest and gives me a temporary warm/fuzzy feelin' on good vibes from the past. Kinda cleanses the soul for 3 minutes and lets ya start w/ a new attack.
When you feel yourself becoming fed up or stale, take a break from what you're doing and go back to one of the reasons you picked up the guitar in the first place.

I'm constantly frustrated with guitar. The stuff I love to listen to is often too difficult for my ability level and I don't have the vocabulary to write my own stuff.

Music keeps me going. I hear a good riff and all I want to do is play.

I don't know if fed up is the right way to put it, but there have been times I've needed a break from it.

Sometimes I have played little or no guitar due to life and what's going on in it.

Other times it's my choice.

When I taught guitar I played during the day, and if I had a break between lessons I often played as well. So when the summer break (July & August) rolled around I purposely didn't touch a guitar for at least a week or so to take a break from even thinking about it--and I needed it. The last summer break I had I purposely took a month long break. For the month of July I did not touch a guitar or take one out of the case. No music stores, no reading guitar books or magazines, etc. I did listen to music, but not as much as usual.

I needed it after a longer year.
And on August 1 it was great to plug in a gain and blast out some riffs.

When I was younger & heard about a musician coming off a tour and taking a break I didn't get it--why would they not play when they could?

Well they just toured, often for over year-after writing & recording an album. It was time for a break and to re-connect with family & friends outside of the music.

While I was never really a gigging musician, let a lone a touring one, after teaching I started to get it.

I'm going through a bit of a down patch with my playing lately.
Been semi pro most of my 53 year old life.
I don't find myself going to music shops, guitar shows or gigs as much.
Still enjoy playing at the occasional jam & at home
Maybe it's because...

The gigs/gig goers aren't there like they used to be.
I don't feel I have to prove anything to anyone anymore.
I no longer enjoy being around complicated band 'mates'

I just enjoy other stuff more....Travel, learning other instruments.
Just got into Bluegrass Banjo

Anyone else relate to this ?

Indeed! When the dream of making it big is gone, well...why put up with difficult people? The only reason I did it was because I needed them, so I thought. What a life.

Frustrated yes. Fed up no.

I just left a band that was very frustrating to play with. What started as a fun project ended up being dominated by a manic depressive sociopathic dictator.

I'm just hanging around the house learning some old blues stuff and practicing my slide playing. I'd like to get into a blues band, but finding a real blues drummer is almost impossible.

I have never done more than make a little beer-n-gear money from gigs, but after playing mostly electric for twenty years, I was burnt out. I sold my eletric gear and played only acoustic for seven years.

I rediscovered the joys of playing for myself, and myself only.

Not fed up so much as being in need of some new material to work on.

I get fed up with people, job, the shape the world is in, finances, but not playing my instruments. I agree with the suggestion of finding something new to work on.

I still like playing but my shit hurts. Playing notes on the top couple strings, 4th fret and higher creates great pain in my wrist. Takes the mojo outa my tone.

Intro to Sour Girl in particular.

Maybe 'fed up' is too strong a way of putting it. I'm fed up of loud volumes, especially as my body seems to be reacting against it as I get older. Morning after headaches & recent onset of Tinnitus, albeit fairly mild, but concerning all the same. I guess it's a case of finding the right vehicle... I'm into mellower music nowadays & I've gotta hear the individual instruments coming through at their best to really feel like I'm inside the music, which is one of the reasons I'm appreciating acoustic instruments more nowadays.
Most of my recent/past music has been based round a Friday nite jam venue I've been involved with setting up, but it does attract the prima donnas who LIKE TO BE HEARD!!!! My head is usually messed up for most of the following day & that's with earplugs!!!
