Do you, and how blatant, lie to your wife about the guitars?

That "marry her" line was for LoKi, but while I was away two more guys showed up.

So LoKi, go marry her right away!

I have an Epiphone LP Custom in white w/ the pickguard and selector ring removed. I decided it was time to move up, so I got an Epiphone Elitist LP Custom, removed the pick guard and selector ring, and left it sitting around on the couch for a couple of days. No questions asked! Now, there's a white Gibson LP Custom shop at my local shop for $3,400 - its what I've been holding out for. I don't know if I'd be able to pull that off or not, though (she's aware that I'm saving up for a "Gibson," so it'd just take one quick read of the headstock and I'd be busted!).

I've also, like Eddie, bought guitars, stashed them for extended periods of time, and pulled them out. "THIS old thing???"

I haven't had to lie yet... but I sure am sneaky!

I don't lie to her about guitars, I just don't tell her about them. I don't know if she doesn't notice, or doesn't care. Not going to bring it up to find out.:naughty:

I won't lie to her... but I have been known to do the old "what she doesn't know can't hurt me" thing before...

2 of the things I've done over the years when faced with a guitar purchase that I know she'll give me #$$%^* for is:

#1 - Name the guitar after her (or her mother, etc.) Then you can say things like "but honey, I could never sell YOU"

T5_Barb.jpg

#2 - Make the guitar "from Santa" (and, to top it off) get 2 guitars - 1 for me and 1 for my son. I did this with a matching set of cherryburst Hamer imports - the Flying V for my son and the Explorer body for me. Both were standing in their cases with big red bows on Christmas morning with a letter from Santa telling my son how he needed to keep practicing and how he now had a "real rock-n-roll guitar like his daddy"...) You can't argue with Santa (at least not in front of an 7 y/o. :naughty:

I buy instruments and my wife buys jewelry,so it's a fair trade, but she does keep count of how many guitars I have so she knows if I have bought a new one,so I just trade and barter if I am gassing for something new, although she hasn't noticed the new Squire Deluxe active V bass yet, it's in sunburst so it looks a lot like three of my other basses so I must agree with keeping them the same color idea.

Buy guitars that are similar to colors you already have.. Women go by color not design..

I showed her a picture of the EDS-1275 that's on its way to me. I would assume from "OK, you can play it at home, but you're not going out gigging THAT" that she won't confuse it with my LP Special.

She's wrong, 1st excuse and it's out there.

With my wife, she likes only black guitars with gold hardware, so i can by any model, any price , with that color combination, as long as there is food on the table and a roof over our heads .
If i buy any other color.. It's lights out"

There where two guitar's , my wife, couldn't or wouldnt say one word.
AS i tribute, I bought a Rickenbacker after my Mom passed away in 1997, and in 2007 i bought a ( rare) Fender flame Elite, when my Dad passed away.
Just something to have, and hold on too.
So two out 19 are legit...LOL

I recently bought a guitar on Ebay and decided i wasn't going to tell my wife since she thinks i have too many as it is. I bought a money order for it and put the stub in my wallet. Well as luck would have it, I leave my wallet on the table and she decides to bring it to me. It falls as she's handing it to me and guess what fell out. I spent an hour explaining why i didn't tell her about it and lets jusy say i haven't had a chance to play it.

I learned the lesson the hard way and am better for it. A woman who truely loves you, loves everything about you or in the least accepts everything the way you are. A women should appreciate the fact that you play guitar and or love guitars, just as she may love shoes, diamonds, and dresses. She shouldn't try to change you, nor react in such a way that would force you to lie. That said, some people do take things too far, and if you're struggling to make car and house payments because you bought an R9, I'd say you deserved to be yelled at for having your priorities completely out of whack.

I'm divorced by the way, but not because of guitars....though I did really want to crush her skull with one/

Now... reality... ya we've all left out certain details at times to soften the blow... but a good wife would just say "Well hun, I guess we're buying me that god damn dress now aren't we..." ..."Yes Honey.":rofl:

Well, she wasn't me wife but she busted my balls for some freewheeling guitar spending benders.
That is until I invented the concept of "our guitar" "honey let's watch our guitar on ebay".......well she's history and the guitars are safely in my possession. pfft. Giddy up.

MY wife is great, she buys my guitars / lets me buy them (now). For other stuff like pedals or whatever, I pay cash, or use paypal which was tied to my old bank account, which is no longer.....

FYI, never lie about guitars....... just lie about amps... =)

I am currently on Gear restriction. After spending $8000.00 on two guitars in the past two months, I guess I should be. Although my fiancee bought me a Epi worn studio Firebird for my birthday, and paid for half of my 68' Custom VOS reissue. Now, i'm not allowed to buy anymore solid body Gibsons this year. That's because I have to save up for my wedding in September. But after reading this thread, I'm not so sure about that anymore. :)She has stated that she won't mind how many guitars I have as long as it makes me happy. I think that she also likes that it keeps me away from her while she watch's reality T.V. and girlie crap shows that I can't see wasting my time on. Lie to her about them? not yet, but I always approach the conversation from the "well Gibson says they should sell it for this price, but look what I got the guy at the shop to sell it to me for scenario." I pray that she never gets wise to that. I think they created the list price and street price for guys like us, that way we can show our significant others how good we are at being financially savvy, and saving money.:slash::slash::wave:

Last Xmas, after telling my wife I didn't want anything, she insisted I take however much it takes and go get my dream guitar. That's how I ended up here on this forum. I've spent a ton of money in the last five years and haven't had to hide a thing. She does look at me funny sometimes, like, "I can't believe that piece of software costs 300 bucks" Or "I can't believe you want to drive for 6 hours to check out new pup's for your Gibson"

She is the most tolerant and easy going woman on the planet when it comes to my music stuff. We live below our means in a home barely more than 1k square feet, and this is the panorama view from my kitchen of our only public living space...

My ex wife? Not so much... :naughty:
