Hey guys.

I did a search but didnt find anything definitive.

My buddy has a les paul with tuners similar to this,

DSCN2451.jpg

except they're the stock Gibson kind stamped: Gibson Deluxe, and they're falling apart.

He wants me to change them but Im trying to find him a good, cheap, drop in replacement. I know Stew mac has some but my main concearn is that the new ones dont have the back that can pop off like the current kind. His are cast and the tangs that you pene over are shot and all the backs are popping off.

I dont want to have to make any new holes and we're a metal band so they have to be pretty heavy dooty!

The guitar in question is about a 92, Gibson studio.

Thanks for any help.

2nd time in a week. Most manufacturers have specs posted on their web sites.
You can get the mechanical drawing for all of these tuners with a search.
Now H.E.L. Shane knows what he it talking about but suppose you got a reply from somebody that didn't know jack shit but speaks with authority?
Someone once said "trust but verify" it might be the only thing that guy ever said that was coherent but it is a good way to go.
If you buy $20.00 tuners you will be doing this again soon.

Solid rotomatics even if you have to ream.

Well, I meant fairly cheap I guess or cheap with regard to quality. The guy doesnt mind paying but if there are 2 styles of tuner that are equal but one costs more simply because of the name, he would like the cheaper version. Looking for the cheapest possible good quality tuner. Him and I are similar people and we know its not worth it to cheap out too much.

I know I wont get anything good for cheap but the TPK's seem a bit more than he would like to spend (100).

Somewhere around the 60 dollar range would be best.....if possible.

The main concearn is the screw holes being aligned and a solid housing.....not the fall apart style it came with. Dont mind reaming if I have to.

Sorry if this is the second time this week. I did a search and found a few replacements but I couldnt find anywhere wheather or not they had the solid housing he wants.

There's an ebay seller called gibsondependable who sells the studio parts so they'd be an exact fit, looking at his previous and current sales he's always got loads of those gibson deluxe tuners for sale and they always sell around $30 to $40 a set. Bound to be other sellers selling the same tuners also.

K missed the "not the fall apart style it came with" bit, although I doubt the stock gibsons will be any worse than a $60 dollar set

+1

as long as you stay away from the early to mid '90's models... the "Made in Germany" ones you'll be fine.

I got a set from a 2004 that are fine tuners, they are japanese made.

Ok so the big question here is, do the TPK's have the "fall off back" or is it a solid sealed housing without the tangs you have to piene (how the heck do you spell that word?) over?

Forgot, that was the main reason I was doubting those tuners, considering the price.

Also, should have mentioned that his are the stock Gibson type that are stamped: Gibson Deluxe rather than Grover Deluxe. Edited original post to reflect that.

So no one that has used these tuners can tell me if they are a solid housing or the pop off kind? Its hard to tell from the pics and it doesnt say in the description, or it didnt load completely (dial up).....or I couldnt understand it if they did.....

All of mine = TonePros are solid housed. Titanium innards I believe.

Gibsondependable like mentioned above typically has tons of studio stuff and tuners out the wazzoo. Pretty good deals and service, fast shipping. I "think" I busted him using a "ghost" bidder on an auction I was participating in a couple weeks ago, but keep in mind that is a "think". But, other than that, seems to be honest and upfront, and responsive.
