The crowd around MLP seems mostly to be into Blues and Classic Rock, but I get a little tired of watching another Clapton or Bonamassa performance sometimes...no offense!

Those guys are awesome, but what about some of the true founders of 80s and 90s grunge/alternative? This is one of the bands that started it all and inspired people like Kurt Cobain, Billy Corgan, etc. J Mascis is also pretty much credited with bringing the Guitar Solo back to indie/alternative music. He and David Gilmour probably have my two favorite single coil guitar tones. Check them out if you aren't familiar with them, here's some songs in rough chronological order:

I know I can't be the only huge Dino fan here, can I?

I love them.

So much that I actually bought one of the 'signature' J. Mascus Jazzmasters. And have some of their Pitchfork TV videos permasaved on my TiVo.

Awesome! I came sooo close to buying a J. Mascis signature Jazzmaster, since he's definitely one of my 3 favorite guitarists or so. I would have bought it if it came in any other color; it just wasn't my style.

I will buy an AVRI sunburst Jazzmaster one of these days.

I was lucky enough to see Dino last year in San Diego, finally, after wanting to see them for about 17 years!

Wow, a blast from the past! I had Green Mind on vinyl back in the day. It was one of my favorites at the time.

Definitely a blast from the past, but I never stopped listening to Dinosaur Jr after discovering them in 1991. They've really stood the test of time for me, more so than any other band I can think of from the same era. I don't really listen to Sonic Youth or Nirvana or The Smashing Pumpkins anymore, but I'll still listen to a Dino album from start to finish!

Yea, I was into all those too and now I can't really understand why. I was big into Sonic Youth. Funny, the album everone considers their "sellout" - Dirty - is IMO the only one to hold up. "Chapel Hill" is still one of my favorite songs:

I was one of those plaid lumberjack wearing alt rock kids in my teens, the early nineties were a killer era to be a teen.

I saw Soundgarden on the 1992 edition of Pinkpop.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHkddVeF5cg]YouTube - Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose (Live @ PinkPop)[/ame]

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfcjR2A4PzQ]YouTube - Zwan - Jesus, I[/ame]
Zwan - "Jesus I"

I miss that era and I miss the music. I would love to start a band in that vein but I don't know how I can pull it off without people seeing me as a nostalgia act.

As for Dinosaur Junior, love them, their last two albums were killer, they haven't lost it at all.

Love 'em. You're Living All Over Me is a helluva album, well ahead of its time.

LOVE THEM.
Rare that a reunion produces much in the way of decent new music, but their new albums are great. The guitar work and production are weirdly awesome. Sludgefeast is a great one. I'm Insane from the mid/late 90's, Been there all the time....

And for all us ex-BMXers and skaters........A cool video

You guys will probably laugh at me because the only song I know I've heard of theirs is "Feel the Pain", but I always thought it was cool. The frenetic tempo changes in that one are great.

Also, the early REM is great stuff too. Murmur was a beautiful album. My favorite off it:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCMy6kq5ZA0&ob=av2n]R.E.M. - Talk About The Passion - YouTube[/ame]

I was in a band which did this:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PMGabbWM5s]Jane's Addiction - Pigs in Zen - YouTube[/ame]

... but my favorite guitar-pop/alternative band from the 80 was the Church, hands-down:

Thump, if you like Feel the Pain, you'll probably like most of their songs.

We used to play Jane's "Whores". I used to intro it by saying "this is one for all the girls I've loved before."

Big fan. Last saw them in Sydney in the mid 90's but they still come up on regular rotation on my ipod to this day.

Out there and Keeblin' have to be my favourites.

The early '90s were indeed great for rock, and it extended to a little club in Hawaii, Pink's Garage, where DJr, Nirvana, the Pumpkins, Porno4Pyros, L7, and thier conterparts all came over to play their butts off. Janes and Megadeth both played their last 2 shows on Oahu, the Peppers, Sonic Youth, Alice In Chains, and White Zombie played better than ever when here, and I got them each on uncirculated archives to relive those awesome moments. That 5 year stretch was a quasar that we all need again.

YouTube - Sonic Youth - Chapel Hill

That line where Thurston says "Throw me a cord & plug it in to get the Cradle rocking" is in reference to the Cat's Cradle, a music venue that was in Chapel Hill (now it's about a mile down the street in Carrboro) where I have worked for the past 15 years.
